Just read article on back of West re: Andrew Browne
I don't know any of the specifics of Andrew's circumstances but am pleased club is handling the matter in this way.
If we take the article on face value (sometimes dangerous with the West) I think it's a great message to send to potential recruits, their parents, and the wider community that we'll support our 'employees' and if found to be at fault will do something to ameliorate.

Freo are on a hiding to nothing on this one because they are Browne's previous employer, not the AFL. Thankfully, the opportunity to do the right thing will be taken and the great message will be sent. But....
The clubs and the AFLPA should insist that some/all compensation should come from the AFL, not the clubs.
The grievance should be directed toward the AFL. It's their competition. Browne was picked in the AFL draft, not the Fremantle draft.
I want Browne to get whatever he needs, but if there's a financial component, the AFL needs to be held liable for some of that.

superswede, I think the AFL will be watching this case very keenly. I'm not sure what Browne is looking for here either (I can only assume it's a monetary payment, don't know what else he could hope to achieve?) but if he's successful, it won't be the last action of it's kind.
I was of the understanding the AFLPA was already very heavily involved in supporting players - both during their careers and afterwards. I'm not sure what more a club or competition can do for those that unfortunately never quite reach their potential.

Just watched Channel eGurls' report... Freo is doing all it can to support Brownie.
Kudos.

Merc, I'm in Melbourne and Freo are lucky to rate a mention twice a year so haven't had the chance to see the report - any chance of a run down and thoughts on why the grievance process is required if the club is doing everything it can for him?

Let's be clear, I'm not on the inside so the following is my interpretation...
i) Browney experienced seven (?) years in the AFL at Freo, most seasons curtailed by injury
ii) As he tackled season 2009, he again suffered an injury that precluded him from playing
iii) His relatively long but exasperating career resulted in clinical depression
iv) His contract was terminated when he walked away from the club mid-2009
v) It is Browney's view that the AFL system (and Freo, as its representative) contributed to the onset of depression.
vi) Freo is happy to recognise that the unforgiving AFL system contributed to his suffering and are keen to pay out his contract.
vii) Freo are seeking salary cap relief so that any such payout isn't counted against them.
Pav said that he (and others) spent a fair amount of time with Browny last year, and will continue to maintain that relationship.

The club are trying to help him but don't want any payments to be included in the salary cap.

Is the salary cap a concern for this particular payment, or a concern about any payments that may be required in the future? If it's the former, there's more than a few questions that need to be answered by the club.

Any new payment that was regarded as being part of the salary cap would be a concern. Not sure of the exact figures, but if Freo are operating at a figure that fluctuates between 94% and 96.5% of the cap, a payout of $100K or $200K (just as an uneducated ballpark guess) would be catastrophic.
