Premiership Porthole?

Stop me if i'm getting ahead of myself, in fact don't stop me, I know i'm getting ahead of myself, but how close are we to making a Grand Final next year?
At the start of the year I had us finishing 9-12, but putting some more games into the kids and, working on the theory that you need 50 games before you hit your straps, I expected us to make the finals in 2011.
Michael Barlow and a few others have made that look like the kind of dull and cautious prediction made after a bunch of actuaries get on the valium together.
We're playing for each other and we've started playing the kind of football that wins you finals.
My problem is the age of the side. We're not as young as people think.
Pavlich is 28 and last week-end showed that any Dockers flag is going to have him putting on the Superman cape. Sandi is 27 and although I think he could still out-tap Dawson Simpson from behind a zimmer frame, he's likely to decline when he hits 30.
Add to that Tarrant (29), McPharlin (28), Hayden (29), Hasleby (28), Headland (29) and not forgetting Grover (30)and we're left with a lot of players who have maybe two peak years left. Among them are all our quality talls, except MJ.
With that in mind I believe we have a small Premiership window - which a friend cleverly called a Premiership Porthole in 2011, and possibly 2012.
Geelong are ageing and won't have Ablett next year, St.Kilda are getting on and if Riewoldt has anything like the hamstring injury lloyd had, he won't be the same player. The Bulldogs three key forwards (Hall, Aker and Johnson) have a combined age of 99, and Collingwood are about to implode due to the collision of the three massive egos of McGuire, Malthouse and Buckley.
This leaves the way for a Freo v Brisbane, or Freo v Hawthorn GF next year.
Please tell me I'm not dreaming.

Moose, your not dreaming.
I will help you remember the part you couldnt remember, I get a vibe that in your sleep you also conjured up images of Hill winning the Norm Smith this year against the Cats.

You're dreaming.
Sandi's got more than 2 years left in him for a start. We can win without Pav and (one breath for this) Hayden, Headland and Hasleby have all lost significant time to injury.
Taz has plenty left, so does Elvis.
nup... you're dreamin'.
It's this year, next year AND the year after.

Pav so deserves to be part of the first flag. We may need to bring it forward.

Pav is extremely resilient and will probably play another four years at least. Sandi should be the same, probably going an extra year. I don't see why the big fella should decline, as long as we get some good support for him.
I reckon we have a four year porthole when we can call on the majority of these guys and we have done very well in grooming replacements. Mayne-Headland, Silvagni-Taz, Broughton-Hayden, Barlow-Hasleby etc.
Replacing Pav will be tough but hopefully he can lead us to our first flag. Aside from all the joys that would bring me perhaps the ultimate would be the look on that blokes face when it happens, and then when Belly (?) hands him the cup.
And, of course, Hill winning Normie.

Dont worry about the older players, worry about a bunch of very talented kids that cant get a look in playing wafl. Many of them will step up as needed but I will fear we will lose many as the other clubs arent stupid and the men with large brown paper bags will come.We have at least half a dozen that would be playing for other teams right now [clarke pearce bolle etc]

Guy, it's a little premature to be talking about back to back to back premierships don't you think?
Back to back maybe though.....

Pav is superhuman. While they're becoming a rare breed he can play as a dedicated full-forward and outmark anyone one-on-one in the goal square on GF day.
For a flag you need everything to fall into place:
- luck i.e. other teams' key players injured
- more luck (bounce of the ball stuff)
- no injuries to your stars
- vets to play well and hang on
- top draft picks to perform (so far so good)
- midfield development to go up another gear so we can stand toe-to-toe with any midfield group and crush them**
- Sandi to stay injury free - his body is actually pretty football young and a minimum 3 more years out of him would be awesome
- some of the draft picks we haven't seen to turn into key position prospects (Joel Houghten et al)
- list management, player relationship to club & coach, and 'chance' to win a flag all combining so that our kids don't walk out the door for cash.
I'm preaching to the converted and someone's already posted it here somewhere but our list is just the right age to take advantage on the compromised drafts coming up. Especially as well can upgrade our awesome rookies to the main list at draft time if available talent is not there.
**I am REALLY looking forward to having Mr R. Palmer back in our new midfield. Few people have been critical of his disposal - it is relative to how much time and space you have and the protection being afforded to you by your teammates. As a skinny teenager he was our best midfielder in 2008 he used to get pummelled. With Haze, Barlow, Mundy, Hill, Mora, Pav, Crowley, de Boer, Pearce, Suban, Ibbo etc all running through the middle Palmer won’t be getting a hard tag every week.
He is going to shred … I hate comparisons but :-) think Joel Selwood in his breakout season a couple of years ago when he went from impressive rookie to game-breaking-contested-possession-machine.

Perhaps just a tad premature.
Beating Adelaide who are 0-3 beating Essendon who are 1-2 and beating a very much under manned Geelong side coming off a crueling match week before and short break.
Sure enough you can only beat who they put on park, and to be challenged in all 3 games and to pull away has been terrific.
A fit Fremantle will see us finish in the 8. Hayden, Headland, McPharlin, Haselby do make a huge impact to the side. Remember Broughton, Barlow, Ballantyne and a few more are mature rookies.
Your dream does have credit, but its best we have a good finals this year and build for 2011-2014 as our window.

yo, Matty T... I have, in the past, been guilty of too much caution. Too much false modesty. Too much pragmatism...
I gave 'em all up for the nude and exuberant approach.
Unleash the mayhem.
