McPhee Value

I've heard and read some dissenting comments about Flinchy McPhee's value in the purple. Can I ask those of you who are undecided, to take a breath?
Flinchy has walked into a new club. Sure, he cut his teeth in the purple, but that was two coaches ago and there's only a handful of team-mates he knows. The coaches are different. The style of play is different. The player profile is different.
Flinchy has matured as a player. He has the "hard" body, a determined mind-set and sound skills; but he still has to pick up the threads of his new environment. Don't expect him to slot into the side without making the odd blunder. Do expect him to gradually perform better and better.
Flinchy McPhee will have an "okay" season this year. But his real value will be evident in subsequent years. I especially like him playing off the wing. He can use his mobility, height and marking ability everywhere from HF to HB.

Can play either ends of the grounds but I have never seen him play well in the midfield.
I think he is a really good footballer, but playing on a flank. Back or forward.
But I do think Harvey has designs on he and Hayden playing in the midfield this year.

Agree that he shouldn't be judged on the preseason, Merc. He needs time to settle in, and his versatility will certainly be handy on occasions.
There are roles he can fill. But, for mine, he'd be an understudy for all of them.

I'm with Mercs mostly. He will have a good season - first up. And I think he can play in the middle even if only as a blocker/stopper though I reckon he can do the clearances too. Just you wait and see. He will be more than useful through the corridor.

I'd like to agree with you Merc but I only agree with us getting good value in terms of us getting him for free. Any output will be more than we bargained for.
I really don't like him in the middle but he can certainly add something from a flank or pinch hitting around the ground as he did at the Bombers. Whether this will be his role I very much doubt it.
I think our midfield is better without him in it.

I think Flinchy will have a similar role this year as as Solly had for the last couple of years.
We need a big body that will go hard at the ball, look after the young blokes who don't quite have the AFL bodies yet, and smash a couple of ugly Rangas when required.
His role at the club is twice as important now that Solly has retired, and for mine he is an absolutely required player in round 1.

Yep, I think that he was taken on as much for his mentoring role as for his onfield contribution.
I like Adam McPhee. I like his attitude, the way he handles himself onfield (flinch forgiven), the way he just gets on with the job professionally without getting into strife. Good, honest, solid, workaday contributor. Much like Solly.
And remember that it took Taz and Solly a season or two to get into the swing of playing with Freo.
The claims that he's been taken on to singlehandedly turn around our fortunes are just ridiculous. But he is an asset, IMHO.

He's a seasoned professional footballer. IF he wants a spot in the side he has to earn it, so far he hasn't. Granted its only pre season, but if he doesnt pick it up a few rounds in I'd drop him like a Q Lynch chest mark.

i fancy that with hayden, grover, and tarrant around him he'll quickly be shown what he's meant to do here. the fact he's an experienced player won't carry much currency when he's fighting for a spot in the team if his performance isn't up to scratch.
i reckon what we'll see is a couple of 'off' games from him, for which he'll be held to account for. two or three weeks in the WAFL and he'll come back and fill the roll we got him for and play out the rest of the season.

I am a member of the jury still deliberating; however I do agree with Mercury et al.
He will be more important now that Solly has gone because of his larger body and his experience. Not sure that he could quite the enforcer that Solly obviously was, but I would hope that he can break open a few packs if they are there.
I am not sure whether he still fancies himself as a midfielder but half his luck if he can cut it there. It will be an added bonus in my opinion.
I guess that is the most interesting thing actually: He really wants to put his hand up to play in the midfield because he reckons he can play there and was starved of opportunity.
So after some misgivings, I am prepared to give him a break:
'Go Adam, show us what ya got. All power to ya'.

Merc, happy to discuss the merits (or otherwise) of McPhee with you over some cold beverages and chicken-salted chips at about 1pm on Saturday arvo. Freo oval suit you?

I've come in late on this so I'm not sure where the criticsm stems from.... but the preseason isn't even over yet and folk are judging McPhee's contribution and worth to the team?
Seriously?
I knew hi tech 3D movies were going to exact a toll but I didn't expect it here and now.
