Leigh Brown wasn't a first round draft pick he was taken after Hasleby and Pavlich in the 1999 draft.

When you look at first round draft picks for most clubs you will see they have all had shockers as well. It's just the media that make the most of the Dockers drafting errors.

It was still the first round.

There was nothing wrong with the selection of James Walker.

Walker gave good service to the club like Roger Hayden has or Broughton is going to. One was taken at pick six in the national draft and the others were given a shot off the rookie list after being constantly overlooked in national drafts by so called experts.

Speaking of the first round of the 1999 draft, apart from Joel Corey winning 2 flags at Geelong, Freo did way better than most teams and there were a fair few chumps drafted.
Heaps of good players taken from later rounds and have managed to stick around for close to or more than 200 games.

Priority 1 Josh Fraser Collingwood
Priority 2 Paul Hasleby Fremantle
1 3 Aaron Fiora Richmond
1 4 Matthew Pavlich Fremantle
1 5 Leigh Brown Fremantle
1 6 Damian Cupido Brisbane Lions
1 7 Danny Roach Collingwood
1 8 Joel Corey Geelong
1 9 Caydn Beetham St Kilda
1 10 Luke McPharlin Hawthorn
1 11 Darren Glass West Coast Eagles
1 12 Paul Koulouriotis Port Adelaide
1 13 Robert Murphy Western Bulldogs
1 14 Travis Gaspar West Coast Eagles
1 15 David Spriggs Geelong
1 16 David Haynes West Coast Eagles
1 17 Ezra Bray Geelong

Some players drafted in the second round: Rhys Shaw (father/son), Brad Green, Jason Blake, Brent Guerra, Adam Hunter, Jonathan Brown (f/s), Paul Chapman, Guido Giansiracusa, Leon Davis

3rd round: Mitch Hahn, Cameron Ling, David Hille, Lindsay Gilbee, Corey Enright, Chance Bateman, Matty Whelan

4th round: Ryan O'Keefe, Cameron Bruce, Ryan Hargrave

5th: Ryan Houlihan

We got Byron Schammer @ pick 13 when we traded Leigh Brown to North Melbourne.

The really weird thing about Leigh Brown is he is still playing AFL football under a veteran coach. This suggests Phil Smart knew what he was doing, and that perhaps Connolly was a bit hasty in moving him on.

Grover, Dodd and Duffield also came off the rookie list. When you add in names like Hadrill, Haines, Webster, I reckon rookie listers from our own backyard have generally rated way higher than late round picks from over East. Brent Doswell anyone? Toby Stribling?

Looking back, he was probably drafted a bit high for a journeyman stop-gap tall defender with a physique like Humphrey B. Bear - but 204 games and still going... great effort.

"The concerns for Fremantle lie with more seasoned players who need to either get on the ground, or lift their output – Schammer, Crowley, Headland, McPhee, Ibbotson, Palmer, Dodd, Thornton, Hayden and Murphy are either absent or underperforming."

what the....? Hayden, Murphy ....underperforming?

Bit tough on Palmer also. He hasn't played a game since he pinged his knee back in round 5 last year. The club has stated they will not rush him back, particularly to please some medja hack.

Absent or underperforming. I.e. injured or not fielded full time during the NAB.

Yes I understand that's how they've worded it, but they also make it sound like Palmer is slacking off.

Sorry Bear - I was addressing Pedro. How could Palmer be slacking off if he's in the "absent" contingent?
