Lapdog Anderson has pooh-poohed the AFLPA's negotiations and will ignore them if Association doesn't agree to the AFL's terms: click

This will annoy the carp out of the Players' Association but Lapdog looks set to win the duel on tactics. The timing of this memo means that many players are on vacation.

Waking up sleeping giants and filling them with a terrible resolve..............they have bitten off more than they can chew.

The AFL approached them with a fair deal over five years...... they responded in a cyncial and opportunistic manner....."we'll take that but make it over three years".

Andrew Demetriou takes things personally, this has got personal - in the sense that he gave some ground and then got rejected. You don't do that to a narcisstic megalomaniac.

Can anyone see this turning into an NBA type scenario where the players don't turn up (even just for the NAB/Whatever preseason cup) until they get what they want?

The difference between the AFL and NBA situations is that the NBA involves a dispute between millionaires (the players) and billionnaires (the owners). The dispute in the AFL is between well-compensated players who feel they should get a bit more of the pie, and the clubs and a head office that is entrusted with guardianship of the game.

Most people care more about clubs than the players, and care more about grass-roots footy than what the tiny percentage of players in the top-flight make.

If the players strike I don't think it would be received very well by the public.

these people are not getting absolutely shafted either, they get an 11% increase next year.

Yes, players are well paid but a lot of the requests do not seem to unreasonable. I don't think there would be a huge backlash on the players if they refused to play in the preseason comp as long as they put a decent media spin on it.

Would be worse for the AFL to lose broadcasting for the few weeks players did strike then it would be for the players striking.

Well the out clause after three years is cynical because the AFL pay rise is front ended - enjoy the first few years at a higher rate and then at your discretion end the agreement.

They are effectively trying to turn an offered increase over five years into an offered increase over three years - or 80% of it.

Re the travel - what a pack of brats!

Wouldn't you be rapt in your union as a player on a rookie list. They don't get their pay rise in time for next year because the AFLPA boss wants the same deal, but calculated with as percentage rather than the flat amount.

The AFL dissing the players' travel claims is all very well, but would they be more accommodating if it was Collingwood, Carl'n and Essendon who had to travel across the continent and back every second week? Remember the AFL stumping up for a charter plane (with, no doubt, plenty of leg room) for the Blues last year?

Anything that makes travel less taxing helps in some way ease the inequality between teams and players in the AFL - it's not a matter of pandering to players, it's a perfectly reasonable claim by them to help prolong their careers and make the playing field a little more even. I'm surprised our club and the Slime aren't vocally supporting them.
