Have we lost O'Meara?
#371099
Looking at the compensation packages offered to the other clubs, I can't see us getting O'Meara.

Melbourne, Dogs and Adelaide have all got a 1st-round pick, i.e one that will be taken after their first pick in the draft they choose to use it in. If they keep it themselves it'll probably be a pick around the 8-12 mark, BUT if they trade it to the GWS it'll become a pick 2 or 3, assuming GWS has a similar season to Gold Coast this year.

We've only got an end of first round draft pick, which will have the same value (about 20) whether we keep it or give it to Gold Coast. That plus p.16 isn't going to seal the deal any more.

I think all three other clubs will be very interested in getting O'Meara for pick 8-12, and one of them will be able to strike a deal with GWS. Reports in Melbourne are that Gold Coast would also offer their pick 4 in this year's draft to get him, so he's obviously highly-rated

I can see GWS ending up with most of the early picks in the 2012 draft, if there are other players like O'Meara who clubs would trade their compensation selections for.

I don't think GWS will take picks for the 17 yr old minidraft picks, just players. Even though they have a few young uncontracted pickups, and a fair smattering of old has-beens in player/coach roles, it is the 25-26 year olds that they need.

But with Sheedy in charge, who really knows?

It would have to be a pretty good player/s; those pick are likely to be worth #2-5 to GWS.

I agree, moose. The difference between our compensation pick (#19-25?) and the Demons/Bulldogs/Crows', will not be made up by any number of fringe players. To beat their offer we'd also need to trade away some of our key young talent (e.g. Clarke), which would be paying 'overs'.

The only other way I could see us getting O'Meara would be to do something ridiculous and trade Sandi to GWS for a top five draft pick, plus the 'Jaeger pick'. (In this scenario, we'd keep Clarke and Griffin, and trade for Clark too.)

Trading our Clarke will be a massive mistake.

Can't lose O'Meara when we never had him...

As me old gran used to say, "A Bird in the hand is worth two in the bush ..."

Trade away our prospective talent (ie draft picks) but stick with the talent we have developed, like Clarke, at all costs.

surely after this compo deal we got including draft picks it would be better knowing we should go after Bennell instead at least we could get him esp if GWS are having the issues that they are having with him...looks like o'meara will cost too much..i mean with all these wraps on him the kid would literally have to be better than Judd for what people are throwing around!...it's got the makings of a jack watts flop story..

Jack Watts flop?? Surely you jest? The kid is already playing decent and will be a gun.

Trading our Zac for another Clark is absolutely mental.
If we go for Clark, then maybe we can give em Griffen particularly if Griff wants more action somewhere else. Otherwise HANDS OFF the Wolfman

Can someone please explain to me why we were considered to be in the best position to get O'Meara in the first place? I don't understand why we seem to be associated with this kid. If he is as good as everyone keeps going on about then wouldn't every club be chasing his services, including Gold Coast, Melb, Port, Adel, Bris, Foots, GWS who all have draft picks lower than us this year and probably next year as well. I don't get it.

Pretty sure I read somewhere that O'Meara had trained with us due to some AFL arrangement which would explain the association.

Cheers for that. Does that provide us with any advantage in getting him? Or does he now just go in the system with all other players his age?

I guess it may help in that he has a bit of an insight into the club and may prefer to stay in WA with us, however we are still going to have to give up something decent to secure him.

Here's the article on him training with us. It was part of the AFL academy program.
