Fremantle remains the only club whose nickname relates in some way to where the club comes from: its heritage if you like. No animal or bird, no generic basketball/baseball/tiddly winks team nickname, but one that has meaning.

I have found Giants baseball, American football, soccer, ice hockey, basketball and netball teams. Very distinctive.

Now it seems that all these G-I-ants have to do is go recruit some supporters.
After watching that vid ...... you just wonder where they're going to come from.

Could they not come up with a distinctive Australian name?

Why do we find it necessary to constantly go to Yank baseball/basketball/hockey/football associations to get our inspiration?

A distinctive Australian name hey...what would they have used that would have been okay in that area..

i think the Lizards is used somewhere
Snakes indicates you can drive over them skid and their stuffed.
Kangaroos gone
Dingo's none in sydney
Emu's - well being giant chickens aint going to help anything.
then any of the otehr decent Aussie birds are gone, Crows, Eagles, Hawks, maggies, that leaves robins, galahs, kookaburahs cant see that working with newspaper headings very well.

well mind you I would be pissing myself laughing after a shocker for some headlines you could get out of the Laughing birds.

Koala's are pretty much gone because of the bears even though they dont exist.

Giants seems to be something they can easily use, and the locals in WGS are unlikley to associate with most Aussie animals anymore anyway...most of them probably think that Kangaroo steaks come from a farm that breeds kangas rather than unsuccessful boar hunting trips.

let alone that milk really does come from a carton - cows how?

anyway on that note I think the Giant Gs are a good first attempt. the colours will change for sure to some extent i expect less orange more white and charcol to be used in future versions.

I cant see the G being used for very long at all. I think they will have to go a VVVVV seeing its sort of in trend at the moment across most of the clubs

if they do stick with it, we definately should have kept our old jumper cause at least now it wouldnt have been the worst colour combination in the AFL....

best of luck to them, hope they finish third last on 7 wins for the next 10 years and never get a priority pick. same with GCoast.

If Tazzy get the team, what about "Devils", or is that too cheesy? Too close to Demons??

Redned, on the heritage/name thing, I think the Bombers probably count, due to the connection with Essendon Airport. For a while there we had the 'heritage double', whereby our nickname related to our geograpphy and history, and our jumper had a symbol that instantly reflected that. Of course, we traded the second part away for some chevrons, and i presume some magic beans.

The name Giants is pretty average, but the people behind GWS didn't really have much to work with vis their locality. It's a sprawling, boganic collection of suburbs and town centres.

Giants is average, but I haven't heard any better suggestions.
