Count down to the draft
#336081
I'm not sure who'll we draft, everyone is throwing up different people but I would have thought key position players would have been more of a priority than a midfielder with our first pick.

www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/draft-cou...frf9jf-1225952682510
WHAT the Dockers need and who they're likely to get in Thursday's national draft.

DRAFT PICKS

20, 44, 56, 72, 87 (PR), 100 (PR), 109 (PR), 112 (PR)

WHAT THEY NEED

Running players galore at the Dockers. But, like a few other clubs, they need a key forward and a key defender.

With Chris Tarrant gone, a tall down back is probably the first priority.

A mid-sized, versatile lock down defender capable of playing tall and small would be nice. But they're not easy to find.

And too much is left to Matthew Pavlich. A power forward would be handy.

WHAT IT MIGHT GET

In a good position to snare one of two West Australian gems - if they make it to pick 20.

Their priority is Jack Darling - a mid-sized bustling forward replacement for Matthew Pavlich.

But if he's gone, Reece Conca will become their man. Wonderfully-skilled and versatile midfielder would complement a glittering engine room magnificently.

RECYCLING OPPORTUNITIES

John Anthony. Training in purple.

LATE MAIL

Sizing up West Australian super-stopper Angus Litherland as a key defensive replacement for Luke McPharlin and Antoni Grover.

I hope, if available, we take Jack Darling or the next best > 188cm player going around.

Who we pick of course depends upon who is available and how the brainstrust think the game will evolve. In my uneducated opinion we need a tall backman to cover all eventualities 195+ but maybe not a tall tall forward. And I say this cos I'm thinking the game - our game - will be different. Sure we need the strong overhead marks over 190 but maybe our goals will come from a different style of play. Maybe not as hectic as in the past with less rotations but rapid movement up the ground. We will need SKILLS, long kicks and smart thinkers and blokes with GRUNT who can stand up in a contest. Collingwood tended to use every square metre of the field (as is malties want over the years) but surely that game plan can be defeated with the right combinations. On game day we need to play to our strengths with whatever we have and thats the job of Harves and co.

What about Columbo? Why can't he be our backman.
But I agree we need a key forward. Someone who can work well with Mayney, Walters and Ballas and Pav.

Don't know much about Darling but heard he is hard at it and loves busting packs open. A forward line with him, mayne and Ballas could be interesting to watch and even DeBoer. Could have the defenders scared to get the ball. Would be good at 20 if he is as goos as they say.

I was looking at Tall Defenders tho and like these ones:

Pat McCarthy -
Agressive tall defender who can go forward in a pinch. Above-average speed for a man of his size coupled with an ability to take a strong grab led him to All-Australian under-18 honours this year. Averaged 17 disposals at 70 per cent efficiency during the 2010 NAB AFL U18 Championships. He is a neat disposer of the ball and provides good rebound from defence.

And Seb Tape -
Tape is an athletic and agile tall defender who captained SA in the NAB AFL U18 Championships where he averaged almost 12 disposals a game. He shows excelent ball-handing skills both above his head and at ground level.

Reece Conca is a must at 20 if he's still there.

It is almost certain that Darling will have gone before then.

I'm hoping Litherland will be available at 44.

Btw with Griffin at the Dockers it wouldn't surprise me to see Zac Clarke coached as a tall forward (or vice versa?).

Talls (forward or back) at the Dockers assuming we get Anthony:

Pav, Johnson, Bradley, Griffin, Clarke, McPharlin, Houghton and Anthony. Touch wood - Litherland.

Also note that the Big Guy will be more than useful forward at times.

I got my one wish and we didn't even have to go to the draft for him....... TENDAI MZUNGU.
Masterstroke by Lloyd & Co to get him in trade week. This bloke will be a revelation to the AFL and the other clubs might be cursing at how Freo has done it again with a mature age listing.
Other than that, I'd like to see them get Conca and, just maybe a very, very late pick or even in the PS or rookie draft with Ryan Brabazon. A guy that can find space and then deliver the ball so well is like gold these days especially on a big ground like Subi. What's more, he's capable of stepping in (AFL hardened) to fill an injury hole in the midfield should we get another Barlow type disaster next season.

Have a look at the picks GC are getting in this draft. In five years time, how are they going to stay under the cap?

It's not a state team they're being gifted, it's a national team.

The concessions given GC and GWS are a double edge sword. Gives them an amazing start, but will be a headache to manage overtime. Lots of players will enter and exit rapidly thru these teams. Time will tell if they're successful. Personally I think the AFL f*****d up........., again.

Darling would be gold at 20, but can't believe he'll make it there. This guy is being tossed around in discussions ...

Luke Parker

Height: 183cm
Weight: 81kg
DOB: 15/10/92
Club: Dandenong Stingrays (Vic)

Hard-running player who is strong overhead and around goal, has elite endurance and is super competitive. Vic Country representative at the 2010 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, where he averaged 18 disposals and three clearances.

Gotta love the surname ...

Admittedly, I've never seen Darling play. However, during his little 3 minute clip on the AFL website, one commentator remarks that he has kicked "3.10 so far during the championships". I think the fact that he appears to be so inaccurate, may see him slip to 20 for those that doubt he will be around.

Reece Conca, and Angus Litherland are my two wishes for what it's worth.
