Board Nominees
#333993
The club has indicated that profiles of nominees will be released when voting is open at the end of October.
While I believe that we deserve to have all information available asap to allow members to come to a considered decision.
Most of the candidates have given some indication to the press on their thoughts on the contentious subject of what the club means to them .
With this in mind I shall attempt to sound out and ereport on
my repeat my opinion of the candidate .
I contact Mark Antulov who favours retaining the colours of the club (this is our history however short ) and not to change the clubs song without members approval.
He also expressed a desire for the club to encompass the members and generate a spirit of belonging .

I am impressed but will try to contact other nominees and share their response toDockerlanders

Thanks for this thread boorih.

I'm Gary Angel, one of the nominees.

I'm a long time regular reader of Dockerland and occasional poster.

I love the intellectual commentary from posters here, it's head and shoulders better and more articulate than the work produced by professional journos here and in Melbourne.

I've just read all the postings in the thread in which Kate has invited questions. A lot of good questions but no answers yet.

The story in today's West indicates that my views on the jumper, logo and song might be out of synch with most of the other candidates. That is - I'm not too fussed about the new jumper, I think the new logo is poor and you could have produced a better one by asking the Year 10 art students at South Fremantle High to come up with something; - and I'm in favour of keeping the song.

According to the article in the West, many of the other candidates think the new jumper and logo are great and it's time to ditch the song as well. And apparently Kate herself has her fingerprints all over the new work as she participated in the re-branding subcommittee.

There's no doubt that in a field of 13 candidates I will need a lot of luck to win. Same applies to each candidate, including Kate.

The quirky thing about a member-elected Director is that they have no obligation or authority to put members interests before shareholder (WAFC) interests and to do so would probably breach Corporations law or something. What I can offer members is a commitment to quality decision-making at Board level, including the ability and courage to question decisons being taken and to debate constructively and effectively to achieve better decisions. I'll be looking for Board decisions that reflect improved dialogue and communication with club members.

The member-elected Director will have the same standing on the Board as other Directors and will have no more obligation to represent the views of members than any other Director, so it's not really a Board position that carries a responsibility to represent member views. Nevertheless, I will keep an ear out so that I hear member views and can bring a somewhat informed position to the Board table.

regards, Gary

Well done on nominating Gary and for taking the time to post here for everyone to see your thoughts/opinions.

I guess I'll also congratulate you on your honesty. From my reading of your post you're essentially saying that you're prepared to take your opinions to the board and do what you think is best but you won't be representing the members.

Thanks rogerhilly. I'm stating what I believe to be the reality. That this director position is in no way a representative role.

I can and will listen to the views of the membership (if I can possibly ascertain what these are, we are not 40,000 members in unified thought), but when I sit at the Board table my obligations under Corporations law will be to do the best for my shareholder. That's the reality.

Why does'nt Dockerland.com nominate. The meeting can be posted live and all the members can post for or against.
As long theres not a show of hands it think it would work.

It is better that Gary is in the game than not in the game, even if a director's corporate responsibility is to the shareholder. There isn't a reason why members and shareholder interests shouldn't be aligned on many issues.

wrt the current issues, the shareholder seems to have turned a blind eye (at least is not expressing an opinion to the best of my knowledge). A director could act in the members' interest on the reasonable assumption that member and shareholder interests are aligned.

Hi Boorih and other fellow docker fans,

Just to let you know my name is Tony Hume and I'm also one of the Board candidates. I would bring a lot of board expierience to the Freo Board if I get elected, and believe that Freo is more than an AFL club, we have a proud heritage and unlike other AFL clubs we are more than a business. Our members have a brilliant knowledge of football and we don't go to matches just to be seen as the "in crowd". The fact we can have member elections is an important element to Freo's decision making - and ensuring our members have a voice is essential. I have set up an email [email protected] to allow easy access for members to contact me - both during the election and (hopefully) during me term as a club director if successful. I think its important that the members feel that they can contact their Board member regularly - not just at election time!

Great forum - looking forward to the next season already!

Tony

Quick tip for everyone. Write that email address down, do not Google 'Purple Members'.

Tony, please have a read of the "Ready to answer your questions" thread and then tell us your views on recent changes. What would you have done in Kate's situation?
