Parliamentary democracy is for pussies, but the idea of democracy is what you put yourself on the line for ... in the name of human rights, historical symbols and so forth. And the idea of democracy has got nothing to do with consensus or some imagined 'middle' ground.
And, when it comes to footy clubs, it's got nothing to do with member-elected representatives, as proven by the fact that our club got turned upside down while two member-elected reps sat on the board.
Who's 'Kate' this time around? One response would be, who cares? Because what difference did a 'Kate' make the last time around?
Part of the problem has to do with the system that gives us only two member-elected reps. But, even if we had four, there'd be no guarantee that our logo wouldn't change from a paperclip to a staple.
Which is not an argument for saying we shouldn't have 4 member-elected reps. We should. But we shouldn't kid ourselves that member-elected reps will give 'the club' back to 'the people'.

Boards aren't a government - the elected reps are not there to represent members on any particular platform, but like any director on a board, to act in the interests of the organisation as a whole, provide general input into strategic objectives and monitor/supervise the management.
You're deluded if you think one or two board members can be the saviour for your cause.

They put one of ours in the hospital, we put one of theirs in the morgue. They take away our club's identity, we vote on the most annoying person they will ever have to sit around a table with. I nominate Jesse Dart.
That's democracy...Spearwood style.
Obviously, no offence meant to Jesse. He's great...in short bursts on tv.

Basically, yeah.
But the interests of the corporation are better served if informed by likely rank-and-file responses to newfreshbold decisions, especially when such decisions could prove to be disastrous to the interests of the corporation.
Member-elected reps have a role to play, then, however compromised and incidental it may be.

Unless that role is played by Jesse Dart, which would obviously be front and centre ... and seriously annoying.

Dockerland has always supported the nominees for the member elected position.
Running against kate in the last election, there was never any preference for voting suggested by Dockerland.
Only healthy and robust discussion about all 3 nominees.

Remember my solo campaign of "Socks Up! " in the early days of Dockerland ? Every other team sport codes have listened and pulled both socks up for a double wedgeee. AFL have gone the other way and players can wear imaginary socks.

I think you're onto something Shane. Get someone on the case to interview Jesse Dart. I'm pretty sure he'd have a robust opinion of these shenanigans.

The problem seems to be in the use of the word "club" in relation to this and most other football "clubs". By definition of the word club this (the Fremantle Football Club)cannot be a club because it has only one member.
However, along the lines a a misleading and deceptive conduct claim under s 52 of the Trade Practices Act, it is misleading for the club to sell "memberships" in the "club" to the general public when all you are really getting is a licence to occupy a seat for set periods of time. I think we (and I include myself here) have fallen into the trap of thinking we are members of a club whereas all we have done is contract with a private, sole shareholder company for a licence.
I'm sorry if I've broken the romance of being a "member" of a football club for anyone but this is the sad reality that the steves (that's for you gloved one) have forced me to face by their treatment of the "members" (being the lack of consultation followed by the spin generated afterward).
