TOPIC: Tendai Mzungu

Re:Tendai Mzungu

just found this snippet from an interview Tendai did a year or so ago for the Perth Demons newsletter:

Interviewer: Jars has a number of nicknames for you, such as ‘Toondas’ or ‘Moondas’. It seems that the name Mzungu is quite hard to pronounce. Can you enlighten us as to the background to one of the most indifferent surnames in the league?

Tendai: Mzungu is a bit of a tricky one. I tend to struggle with the pronunciation from time to time myself, so I’m not too critical of those who also find it hard. The name stems from Eastern Africa and although most people find it hard to believe it actually means “white person”… Yet another thing I’m trying to get my head around.

Hahahaha, nah Kent St settled down after the late 80s early 90s...We had some hard nut teachers...i.e. Mr Fletcher.

He didn't really have a nickname, either that or I forget it.

He plays down back and the swahili word for backside is Matako so I reckon its Matako. If he plays well it's Matako Mazuri (nice backside) and if he plays crap the it's Matako Mbaya (bad backside). By the way Tendai east Africans pronounce Mzungu ma-zoong-goo with zoong pronounced the same as book.

No matter how I say it, I can't get zoong to sound like book. We have much to learn from our east African neighbours.

Sounds more like book than boot. Couldn't find a non-offensive English word that rhymed with zoong lol

Hope he fits right in.

Could be another cult figure in the club. Saw him play a few games this year. Think about it has already played with Johnno, Sibosado, Ruffles and Bollenhagen.

He has excellent skills, is a hard player and can kick with both feet.
