Collingwood duo Paul Medhurst, Tarkyn Lockyer announce AFL retirements

October 04, 2010 Just days after Collingwood won their first AFL premiership in twenty years, Magpies veterans Paul Medhurst and Tarkyn Lockyer have announced their retirements.

As Collingwood's flag celebrations were tarnished by reports of a police investigation, Medhurst and Lockyer have reportedly told Magpies coach Mick Malthouse of their plans to hang up their boots.

Neither player took part in the grand final on Saturday.

Medhurst, 28, won All Australian selection two years ago but has struggled to secure his spot in the side this year.

Lockyer played 227 games for the club since his debut in 1999

That's a surprise move. I thought Medders had some good footy in him yet.

He's too young and too good to retire. I asked for a Medders discount when I lined up to get my membership that year. Allison laughed (and gave me a 'how to vote' handout). I wish Medders was still with us and I wish Allison was on the Bored.

Back in those days, I was happy to let a girlfriend touch my camera. As long as she kept her mitts off my Freo boys...
And - I have been suffering with a jinx complex, and for ages steadfastly remained on the opposite end of the camera when there were any Dockers around.
Until this year....
I apologise in advance, because I had my photo taken with Sandi and Mayne....

I remember Mr Cometti outlining how Paul Medhurst was another average Freo player who turned into a champion when he left our Club. Good call, Den.

You gave us some wonderful exploits over the years in the purple, Paul. Best wishes for your retirement.
