Walsh's stance is a change of tack for the Magpies, who had previously indicated they were unfazed if a deal could not be done to recoup Tarrant, who played 161 matches for the Magpies as a key forward in nine seasons until 2006. The left-footer re-made his career in the last two of his four seasons at the Dockers, when he became a close-checking key defender.

With trade week set to end at 2pm today, the move of the 30-year-old was at a standstill overnight, with Tarrant threatening to retire if he did not get to play for the Magpies.

That threat may have been enough to see off other suitors Hawthorn and Carlton, both of whom were keen on grabbing the former Collingwood leading goalkicker to shore up undersized, inexperienced defences. However, both those clubs have choices in the drafts ahead of Collingwood.

Walsh says Tarrant is aware he may not get the end to his career he seeks.

"He understands the mechanics of the thing...

"All along he knew it was far from a certainty..."

Why Collingwood is so keen on Tarrant, when young guns Ben Reid and Nathan Brown were so impressive during their successful finals series, is unclear.

Veteran full-back Simon Prestigiacomo remains able back-up, and has not indicated he will retire. Also in the wings is capable swingman John Anthony, 22, who kicked 50 goals last year as a full-forward, but came to the Magpies as a key defender and played well in defence in the reserves in 2010. In his latest appearance in black and white, he played back during the round 21 match against Adelaide.

Anthony was mentioned as potential trade bait last week, but supposedly, has fallen off the radar of clubs seeking a key defensive prospects.

Yes, the deal with Tazza seems to be on the cards to be done today.

The guys on Trade Week radio are now talking D. Kerr to Carlton for A. Walker.

So Freo have Griff for 61 and the Crows have Jacobs for pick 33 and 67 - nothing on Taz yet.

So Hackdorn is half right - seems fair enough for a half wit.
