Black Ducks: one party ain't enough
#329156
For all the members and supporters too knackered on Sunday night, the Mighty Black Ducks are holding another celebration of their spectacular GF win tonight - 6:30pm down at the prestigious rooms overlooking the historic Steel Blue Oval in Basso.

Come and share a frothie and some chatter with Kraks, Pearce, Wolfie, The Hinkleberry and the rest of the gang - I'll be there in my Polly boots reliving one of the greatest moments in WAFL history. No doubt all the greats will be there - it could be that the legendary Shane Beros will rock up with his latest batch of home brew.

Are they firing up the forklift to get Scotty Cummings there? He looked in magnificent form on Sunday.

Enjoy! The House of Heave Hoes in Melbourne was thrilled by the result! even though we are east v south freo divided, we were barracking for swannies for a range of reasons. We're two the many proud aunties of Shane Beros ... there will be many in the family celebrating in Basso and good luck to them! I'm happy especially to see Pearce and Walters enjoy winning a flag, let's hope the next one is purple. And for Andrew Krakouer ... what a fantastic transition - and brilliant reward. I can't wait to see a tape of the game. Have a drink for me. Heave ho!

A full replay of the game, cut price drink specials, a full contingent of players and a supporter base savoring a memorable win - this is how a club pulls together it's constituent parts and caps off a year of bloody good footy.

I think the local example, set by the WAFL clubs, has become lost on the AwFL teams. The Black Ducks captain, Josh Roberts, summed it up at Subi on Sunday afternoon when he thanked the supporters of the club first (and foremost) when accepting the cup. Last night the relationship between the supporters, the players, the admin staff and the sponsors was like one big happy family. No nervous tension, no carefully scripted media lines, no evasion or guarded innuendo, just simple and straight conversation full of laughs, familiarity and honesty - sharing the victory amongst us.

This is the way it should be - no doubt the members and supporters of other WAFL clubs wouldn't have done any differently. There was no suspicion that the Black Ducks needed to evolve into the Green/Fuschia/Beige Whatevers, or to alter their corporate profile in some radical reassessment of the changing winds of presumed capital expectation, of unstable consumer want. Nope, this is a club proud of it's history, proud of it's place in the community, proud of the various elements that have made it what it is - of who they are. That is genuine club culture (in its best form).

What a wonderful respite from the concern I'm having with the discussion around the Docker jumper design and our club song. Many thanks to everyone down at Basso for getting it right (and sticking with it) - last night we all had a ball and it was great to be part of it.

The WAFL grand final should be held on a Saturday so supporters can enjoy & celebrate without fear of work day and school the next morning. If there is a AFL final game in Perth I can understand why the GF is changed to Sunday.

I would have a party myself if the Dockers could get hold of young Steve Coniglio. He is an amazing player with the cool head like Barlow in the hottest of situations. This kid has star printed in every gene.By the way that was an amazing final probably the best I have seen in the WAFL. Neither team gave in but one was a kick in front at the final.
