Just sent this to the club (i'm not much of a words smith)
Dear Fremantle Football Club Administration,
I have heard a rumor that the Club is looking to make some major changes to the playing jumper and potentially the club song for 2011. I am lead to believe that the anchor is to be done away with and the three vertical Vs will be used instead. I find this to be most distressing news, as I consider the anchor to be an integral part of the Fremantle jumper and in fact it is the major symbol I visualize when I think of the Fremantle Football Club. The current jumper design I think is very unique and stands out from the other jumpers in the competition, which quite frankly are rather old fashioned and dull.
I would ask why you think it important to throw away such history? I know these is a connection with Fremantle Football Club and the Fremantle teams of old, but as a person who was not involved in any football team, until Fremantle was established, do not see the need to have this connection, we are a club with enough history already established. I for one think heritage round I(if they come up again) jumpers should actually be jumpers the Fremantle Dockers have worn over the last 15 years, because that is our history and legacy.
The fact of the matter is that Fremantle Football Club is about purple, white, red and green. It is about the anchor. It is about doing things differently and not following like sheep other clubs in the AFL. Other clubs will make comment of their many years of history with jumpers that hark back to the 1930’s and club songs based on music of that era, but that does not mean the Fremantle needs to market itself on those same criteria. We are a modern club, with modern thinking and modern designs, which makes the club standout.
Frankly the three v design looks too similar to a Victoria state jumper, too similar to Port Adelaide’s current jumper, too similar to enumerable OLD style VFL/AFL jumpers and I do not know why the club would want to emulate them.
Fremantle is a club in it’s own right and does not need to copy anyone else. Fremantle Football Club is the Anchor.
I sincerely hope that these rumors are unsubstantiated, as I love everything that Fremantle as it stands now. I know change is always inevitable, must always occur at some point, but I encourage you to question is this sort of change necessary, especially when the club is moving into a bright future. Why when we are finally seeing some positive results would you think to rid ourselves of the identity that got us here.
I thank you for your time,
Kind regards
Ian Ross

Happened to be chatting to the person who wrote the original club song (as well as the slime and Sowfs) the other day.
He mentioned at the time they were looking at alternatives - but I dismissed it and did not think to ask any further questions.
Maybe I should have.

New executives who believe in consultation sounds like a much better idea.
Those responsible would do well to move to Victoria and see if they can get a gurnsey with the current State Govt. They are not big on consultationn, either.
This is preposterous. A jumper tweak, maybe.
Not radical redesign.

The anchor is ridiculous.
The colour combination is ridiculous.
The song is ridiculous.
So they may be... but they're ours. This had better not be happening.

My feelings exactly Giumelz. Im not going to let a new jumper design get in the way of my feelings for this great club.
Yes we are original, flamboyant and unique and its these traits that lead me to believe that we can pull this off.
I really like the new designs as I said and I still believe that the time would be perfect now, as the club culture evolves, to do this for all the reasons I stated earlier on this thread. Ive always believed that we are a modern thinking club and not stubborn like those Vic clubs ie. Collingwood when it comes to jumpers and such.
I still like the new design and so do a lot of the peeps I have been talking to. (All paid members by the way).
But as long as we dont totally lose the anchor. Have one on the back of the neck and maybe create a purple haze style "anchor game" where we don the 95-2010 strip would be great. The Big blow up anchors would hopefully still be present at all games regardless.
So many people saying, "Yes the anchor is crap, Yes the song is crap, but they are ours!". It would be good to hear more of us say our song is the greatest song in the AFL or Our Guernseys S### all over everyone elses.
As Far as the song goes, like I said I reckon just add a verse before the current song and it would cap it off and give it a more appropriate build up. No need for an entirely different song.
3 v's or the anchor, Im riding this train all the way!
