Referendum 2011
#334922
So, given that that the club has to clear their jumpers with the AFL well before the season, there’s very little chance that we’ll see anything other than the chevrons in the coming season. Perhaps as (disgruntled) members we should push for a vote at the end of next season. Rather than a fuzzy survey of ‘brand elements’, all the members can vote on actual options. There could be three sections:

i. Jumper. A choice between the original jumper, chevron jumper and purple haze jumper
ii. Logo. Original ‘docker’ (perhaps with or without red and green, depending on the result of part i.) versus the paperclip
iii. Song. Original song versus two new options.

Smarter people than I could work out the best system for tallying votes (I would argue 3-2-1), but everyone would have their say. I figure the people who love the Original jumper will be less upset because they get to have a say, and have a chance of getting it back. People who love the Purple Haze jumper actually get to vote for it. People who love the Chevron jumper should have no reason to worry, because if the players have been wearing it for a year and it really is popular, it will win the vote. People who value change for the sake of change are happy because there’s the prospect of three different jumpers in three years. People who weren’t happy with the process are happy because there is a proper process. People who don't care can continue to not care. The people running the club should be happy because they can spruik for more memberships as a way of people making sure they get to vote, and they actually get to know what the members want, rather than relying on questionable survey results. And best of all, we end the in-fighting, and go back to following football and supporting the team knowing that the right thing (whatever that turns out to be) will happen at the end of next season.

So, apart from some tweaking of the process/options, is there anyone who thinks this is a bad idea? Is there anyone who thinks this would actually happen? And therein lies the problem with the club at the moment.

Morgan, the only issue (other than the Steves having to admit that maybe they didn't get it right before they could do this) I see is that if there are 3 options and they get a vote split of 40% current, 35% option 2, 25% option 3 then what do you do if you're a Steve? You've got 60% of people voting for a change. Sure, they can't agree on what they want to change to, but they want a change. Do you pick the jumper/song/logo with the highest outright percentage, or do you pick the one you like because the members have mandated change, just not exactly which change?

Yeah, I know what you mean. That's the problem with this sort of vote, but surely some smart people could figure something out. But, let's for argument's sake say that the people vote along those lines, but you did a 3-2-1. Purple Haze wins by a mile, because there are elements that both camps agree on. I love the Original Jumper, but could have lived with the Purple Haze, because it is still a Freo jumper, and still has the anchor. I would have griped about losing the colours, but would have gotten over it.

Hell, instead of a Purple Haze game we could have an annual Red and Green game, where we wear the Original jumper and raise money for people with colour blindness.

I think all it does is show that you're going to make some people unhappy regardless of what you do. Funny when you consider that everyone was happy 4 weeks ago.

Roger - If there was a fair dinkum vote and say the Haze won and the board made a call to go with the Haze then I think nearly everyone would be happy. Traditionalists would be glad to have the anchor back, haze fans would be happy as they won, and those who like the chevrons would be happy as the only reason I've seen to support the Chevrons is that we should have faith in the board. Those gormless sheep will lap up whatever the board tosses their way.

Sounds good to me but still want to tar and feather the Steve's and run them back to budgie town on a rail.

Having been away for 6 weeks, I wonder if anyone can help answer whether any board candidates have said they will do as Morgan suggested
"i. Jumper. A choice between the original jumper, chevron jumper and purple haze jumper
ii. Logo. Original ‘docker’ (perhaps with or without red and green, depending on the result of part i.) versus the paperclip
iii. Song. Original song versus two new options.
"
I still have to vote.
Will anyone be putting the referendum idea as a question at the membership meeting?
Thanks everyone, go Freo.

Morgan - agree with you totally.

And if the numbers are close, then it will take some further investigation, but can still be resolved ie. 40% go Haze, 35% go original, then put it back out with just Haze and Original as the options, and see what happens.

At the end of the day, if you treat people with respect and like adults, a solution can always be found ...

laugh_cry; that is the perfect way to put the question to members. So simple and logical. We'll get a true idea as to how we all feel by doing it that way.

If the chevrons win then so be it - a fair and reasonable qustionnaire and we can't complain, but as we've said 1,000 times - we were duped with a bogus questionnaire which made no mention of our playing strip but mearly the training strip.

As far as the logo goes - long live docker warfie dude and jar the new log where the sun don't shine!

I was sitting back in my man shed today. Falling in love more and more with the wharfie logo dude tin signs all over the wall. I would love to be seeing the anchor jumper and logo front up for season 2011.

The reality is it will prob be hard to have it all reversed by the time the season starts.

This reminder of the proper way to conduct a survey of members, supporters is to put a vote to the people. Honestly, if it was done right, and whatever jumper won by the masses I would support it.

The logo, fer cryin out loud is a shocker and I just cannot get used to it.

Derby12 - that (giving the option of original or haze for home jumpers) was pretty much done in the 2004 jumper survey. As seen in the 1st edition of Docker in 2005, 83.8 percent (or something very close - I'll have to check) preferred the standard one.

Given that at that time the haze was the closest to the chevron... were the current administration even aware of this?

That will certainly be coming up at the meeting.
