At 4am I woke up worrying about Freo (again) and thought about how the ground will look at games in 2011.
I am no expert so could someone get a photo of one of the huge Freo crowds at Subi this year and digitally take out all the red and green colours? Then post the pictures on here so the lurkers can see what's going to happen?
Then we could send version 1 (with red and green) and version 2 ( just freshnewbold purple and white) to the AFL, WAFC, the Board members so they can SEE how bland, lifeless and boring it is going to be?
If the proud, loyal, passionate banner that the players run through before a game could receive similar treatment, it might make an impression.
Thank you.

I read a report recently published by a university in Canada promoting the value of chevrons on Purple Jumpers. It seems the refractory properties of said jumper are just perfect for promoting carbon absorbtion and cloud seeding. Thus solving the greenhouse effect in less than 438 years. The addition on green and red embiggened the result by 24.7%.

The new dockers logo could easily fit in here:

Logo

The Islanders' first logo, used from 1972-95.
The short-lived "Fisherman" logo, used from 1995 to 1996.An advertising executive named John Alogna from East Meadow created the original version of the Islanders logo with the NY over a silhouette of Long Island. The current logo is similar, but features a darker shade of blue, a smaller rendering of Long Island and a blue and orange border.

Before the 1995–96 season the Islanders attempted to update their look. The result was the unveiling of a logo depicting a fisherman holding a hockey stick. The logo was a marketing disaster; the reaction among the fan base was so negative that management announced it would revert back to the original logo as soon as league rules allowed them to do so. The traditional logo returned as part of 1996-97's third jersey, and then became the main jersey the following year. Along with changing their jerseys for the 2010-2011 season, the New York Islanders will be changing their logo to the one on their alternate jersey (soon to become their home jersey). The new logo is almost identical to their first logo, (worn from 72-77, except it features four stripes on the hockey stick instead of the original three, representing of the four consecutive Stanley Cup titles in the 80’s.

Precdedent has been set. At least you can say the new logo is better than all of these.

The issue I think we would have of getting this logo changed is that it is not the whole supporter base that is upset with it. i reckon its about 50/50.

I've actually got an Islanders' fisherman jersey. It's hilarious; it's navy and teal, with curvy orange stripes around the shoulders and waist. Perhaps I should start wearing it to Freo games as a subtle reminder about the dangers of unpopular logo changes?

I've been surveying the supporter base for the last week. Interesting and consistent results so far, but I need a few more numbers. It's not 50/50.

Wrong questions.

Do you like onions? I like onions, but maybe you don't. Either way, what difference does it make?

Do you like the new jumper? I do or I don't, but what difference does it make?

When it comes to onions, the difference is subjective but inconsequential.

When it comes to Freo's rebranding, the difference is subjective and may or may not be inconsequential.

How do you make an argument for showing that the difference between Freo's former self-representation and its freshnewbold self-representation is a consequential difference?

What's the nature of the consequence? Is it a good consequence, because it will bring in more money for the club? Is it a bad consequence, because even if it were to bring in more money for the club it will lead to long-term symbolic (and therefore ultimately financial) harm?

What evidence would you provide in support of either claim (or another claim)?

This issue (like any issue, other than those expressing a preference for the taste of onions) is a whole lot more complex than can be decided by liking or not liking a new design. But if those are the only alternatives on offer, then you'll find that, inevitably, many fans (perhaps not a majority, but at least a very significant minority) will 'like' the freshnewbold. Or certainly they won't 'dislike' it to any meaningful degree.

So all you'll do will be to produce supporting evidence for the in-principle 'you beautness' of going freshnewbold.

If, however, the surveyed population had access to all the claims and counter-claims regarding freshnewbolness — as available to those viewing DL, but not to those whose only source of info on this issue was the local media, the club website and/or the club's FB page — you might get a very different survey result.

Asking 'do you like/not like this or that' will ALWAYS produce evidence that seems to justify change.

What surveys aren't good at dealing with is the question of what 'change' might mean (in whatever particular context).

And I don't think the Steves could care less about such a question, which is why the evidence they've produced in favour of change is precisely the same order of evidence that you want to use against them.

Playing by those rules, they'll win.

This survey isn't turning out like that, Wizfan.

Not many people like dumb onions.

Keep writing, e-mailing, calling, facebooking and twittering the club now, turn up at the Members Meeting next month, make sure the club know what Freo supporters actually think.

I assume someone has all ready mentioned this but I am not reading 97 pages of posts to find out. After 5 or 6 years when everyone has bought the new jumper they will switch back to the current jumper so that everyone will have to buy another one. Marketing 101.

For a club that has been so focussed on getting processes right, it is striking how they could screw this up so.

Most of my beef has been about this.

Just now, however, sitting here at my desk staring at my coffee mug, I started thinking about true design and aesthetics.

Apart from the accumulating tea stains, the mug looks ****-hot emblazend with the original and former emblem. There are feelings attached, yes...It makes my eyes go a bit wild. My senses attune. I feel agaitation in my toes and a sensory tingle start under my shoulder blades and run down my back. All the stuff that just says FOOTY. But aside from that it looks darn good.

Imagining the freshnewbold on there, it will just be a purple mug with a name on it.

The Steve's have even infiltrated smoko and made the one part of work that was enjoyable remind me of yuk.

Pricks!
