cough cough Mr mangoraven, the mighty Cardies never changed their colours, or song, or guernsey, or club name. They are still the WPFC.

This is about the here and now, not what happened 17 years ago. This is about our club, not what other clubs do and don't do...most of us thought we were different than the rest...

The fact that we (thought we) were different from the other clubs was one reason why I was drawn to freo.

Shane, I also still proudly have my Old Easts club song on vinyl, and signed as well (by the songwriter D.Warner not the team!).
Come to think of it, it wasnt such a bad club song.
You never know, could it be set for a comeback?

'In all the land there is one club to whom I give my all,
And that is East Fremantle, the greatest of them all!'
And so on...

Might have to work on that one for you Shadow.

It has been a while since I have listened to it, and probably just as long since i've had a record player!

I just re read the original post. Its kinda interesting really. I didn't take it that seriously at the time. Later I thought it was just a Shane chain puller to give us something to write about. Didn't see it as a cultural shift - which some of us now do. It's time to reflect before we hit the magical 100 here and check the facts.

Good point 'mangoraven' - funny how no one has mentioned this.
I remember back in the early 80s the 'Old Easts' changed to the 'Sharks' and changed their uniform from vertical blue and white (St.Kilda style) to a completely different style with more of a horizontal theme (Geelong style).
West Perth changed their name the year before from the 'Cardinals' (Cardies) to the 'Falcons'.
Subiaco changed their uniform in 1980 from moroon with a yellow lion to a moroon and yellow Collingwood style guernsey.
Claremont changed in the mid 1970s from the Carlton style CFC logo to the Richmond style guernsey.
South Fremantle have made a few alterations over the years to their strip as well.
Nearly all WAFL teams have made alterations to their logos in the past 15 years as too have nearly all VFL/AFL teams.
AFL teams haven't quite made as many changes to their uniforms over the years but Hawthorn changed from brown and yellow hooped socks to all yellow in 1989.
Footscray changed in the mid 1990s to Western Bulldogs and made an alteration to their guernsey.
Collingwood had a predominantly white strip with black stripes - they have now changed over the past 12 years to a predominantly black guernsey with white stripes.
South Melbourne changed to Sydney Swans in 1982 and made an alteration to their guernsey in the late 1980s to all red on the back.
Brisbane Bears changed to Brisbane Lions and changed their uniform from the hideous brown and yellow to moroon with the yellow and white 'V' then made an alteration in the late 1990s then made another alteration (and not a popular one) this year.
When you think about it everyone makes changes - some just make a few more than others

All well and good Matto...

but you skimmed over the Brisbane change which was of far greater import than a jumper change. That was a merger of two clubs and the death of Fitzroy.

With your recall, you should remember Freo providing them with a more heartfelt farewell than the AFL did a week later at their last ever game... when we had a bugler play the last post from the top of the stand for them.

Many of Fitzroy's fans held a soft spot for Freo as a result of that and many more now feel completely swept aside after the Lions slowly became totally Brisbane... although they did hold functions for their fans in Melbourne after their flag wins.

Matto, East Freo and Port Adelaide held jumper changing competitions, best design was the winner.
