| Mundy Wins a Doig |
|
Mums around the country gave out a collective 'awwwwww, that's nice' as the news that the gentleman half back ran down a tiring Aaron Sandilands, brought him to the ground, took the Doig medal from around the big fella's neck - then helped him up, dusted him off and invited him around for a cup of tea and a couple of iced vo vos. Just a few days after committing himself to Fremantle for four more years, David Mundy has won his fist Doig Medal in Fremantle's second most successful season after going to into the midfield and leading the youngsters in their to victory after victory. As has become custom, Fremantle put on a lavish event with nary a cocktail frankfurt to be found, funded by high ticket prices and ever increasing membership fees, Aaron Sadnilands and Luke McPharlin were made life members after completing the necessary number of games. After careful consideration, Michael Barlow was given the cursed Beacon Award for first year players but his leg snapping in half midway through the season was deemed a precurser to the award so he should be ok.
Matt de Boer was named best clubman, mainly because they were too scared not to give him something in case he stormed the stage and started dishing out shirt fronts. But it was the Doig Medal people had come to see awarded (possibly the last, with the re-branding razor gang looking for their next project and keen to start awarding the much bolder and sexier sounding "Awesomest Docker Medal") and while for much of the night it appeared Sandilands was going to bolt in and be given permission to eat the runners up, a sore foot and stopped the big bloke in his tracks. While the giant slept, Mundy crept up on him, passed him and then ran away with the medal leaving Sandilands in second place with just Matthew Pavlich in third and Stephen Hill in fourth available for Sandi to eat. Luckily for them he had filled up on bread though, and everyone was able to enjoy the rest of the night and go home uneaten by a giant ruckman. Which, after all, is all anyone can ask from these sorts of awards nights. |
