40,000 people flocked to Subiaco to watch three blokes umpiring. At least that's what they seemed to think. In what will go down as both the most over umpired and the worst umpired games in the history of ball sports, Fremantle first overcame the officiators then overcame Richmond. In an ugly start, they conceded a 5 goal lead to Richmond in the first quarter but quickly got their act together, nutting out a handy 39 point win to reclaim equal top of the ladder status, setting up a Derby next which which should catapult them to the top thanks to the inevitable percentage boosting win.

When the national anthem finished and the crowd erupted, expectations were reasonably high in regards to seeing a decent game of footy. A big crowd, a big occasion and a rousing pre-game ceremony.
