Fremantle's undefeated premiership chances took another blow this week, going down to the North Melbourne Kangaroos by 31 points and bringing up their fourth straight loss of the season. Things looked bad for Fremantle from the opening bounce and not just because Lindsay Thomas was paid a free kick - a sure sign that the umpires have got it in for you. North Melbourne were whipping the ball out of the middle and got out to a 4 goal lead before the Fremantle forwards even had a chance to decipher the terrible kerning on the Four N Twenty sign. Pav and Fyfe swung into action to get Fremantle back in the game but, if they were going to win, it looked like it was going to be through sheer force of will rather than anything resembling structure of skills. Freo dug in from there, slowly pegging back the margin until they exploded into a fiery ball of competence in the third quarter. They owned the centre of the ground, their forwards looked like they knew where the ball was going to go, the defenders were organised and fast and able to put the ball in the general direction of a team mate - Chris Mayne kicked a goal. It was breathtaking. They took the lead and it looked like their season had finally begun….at which point they must have gotten too excited and needed a bit of a lie down. North Melbourne kicked 7 goals in a row and Fremantle were cooked.
Fremantle lost by 31 points.
