Fremantle returned to their scintillating best football, effortlessly moving the football from the centre to the forward line and through the goals, making it look like their opponents had won a radio competition to watch a premiership team train up close. Then quarter time came and they spent the rest of the day buggering about with the footy while North Melbourne desperately tried to make up ground in a last ditch effort to salvage something from their football season. The contrast between Fremantle’s opening quarter and the remaining three was starker than the wings of Etihad with the roof open. They had all the time in the world, every mark stuck, every kick was perfectly weighted and dead straight, they ran hard, they were in all the right places and they had the Fremantle supporters back looking for flights and accommodation for Grand Final week but by the end of the game they were putting up their scarves and jumpers on eBay with the Kangaroos finally taking the lead in the last quarter and hanging on for an 11 point win.
Fremantle lost by 11 points.
