It’s my first outing here for a little while and I’m going to swim against the tide a little.

I think the club did the right thing with Jeff Farmer.

There, I said it. You may call me an apologist, a patsy, that I’m toeing the party line. You might call me a wowser or politically correct. Some of you may have nastier words that Shane won’t let me use on this forum. Some of you may even call me a Big Girl…

But there comes a time when the hard calls need to be made.

Since stepping into the big chair (or the big trackie) Mark Harvey has made the tough calls. His first tough call was late last season when he sought fit to discipline a few blokes who had a problem with punctuality. These were some very senior players who should have bloody known better. But he sent a message to the playing group. “You play in this team, you play by the team rules.”

His next big call was around his assessment of the playing list. And he probably wasn’t alone on this one but it was determined that we had very small window of opportunity to challenge for the flag. Infinitesimally small, but there nonetheless.

So some very good, very experienced players were asked to go around one more time. We recruited in some more experience over youth. We got a few of really good young who we rated very highly and thought we could probably get maybe 5-10 games in them during the year and, if they were good enough, even some finals experience.

It was a big call because if it didn’t come off, it was going to get nasty.

And it was clear pretty early on that it wasn’t.

So the tough call was made – first Matt Carr, then Belly. Heath Black and Macca soon followed. Whatever the circumstances for each of these retirements, every one of them was handled respectfully and with the best interests of the club in mind.

Which brings me to Jeff.

A couple weeks ago circumstances prevented me from being able to watch the game against Richmond, so I was piecing together the comings and goings via the internerd. Not an ideal situation but you get a bit of a clue about what is going on. Jeff gave away a free kick and 50 metre penalty at which time some suggest changed the momentum of the game. A few Fremantle people solemnly declared that Jeff’s season could be over. He was reported but escaped the wrath of the tribunal. It would have been a very sad way for such a remarkable player to go out. Perhaps the Match Review Panel, which hasn’t been Jeff’s greatest supporter over his career, thought so too and had a brief moment of sentiment to give him the benefit of the doubt.

So it turns out Jeff played his last game last Friday night. And what a game it was. I’ve already remarked on this board about his final goal. It was a fitting epitaph to a wonderful career which has brought much joy to his supporters and indeed all football lovers.

It’s unfortunate that there are people out there who want to dwell on the negative aspects of Jeff’s career. But as a club we can’t take a risk on those that don’t want to or are unable to play by the club’s rules. We can argue that the club has lost its soul in treating Jeff Farmer in this way. But as football lovers we can’t risk letting a player like Jeff Farmer ending his career on a sour note by doing something stupid – whether that be on the field or off the field.

Next year will probably be pretty sour (any club that loses the quality and experience from its list as we have will have to go backwards before it goes forward.) But as with this year, it will be punctuated with moments of brilliance, excitement and sheer joy. And in the end I know that whatever happens to our club* 99% of you will all be here next year, and the year after and probably the year after that. I know I will.

* Except if either of those bumbling, stumbling, mumbling Market Gardeners turn up. No-one should be forced to suffer the ignominy of that.
