I bought a ticket for the game on Sunday. Then the boss tells me that I'll have to come to the box he's booked.  Now, if none of you have ever done the box thing before, I have to tell you I 'd really prefer to take my seat.

I'm in 110 and that's not a bad spot. I can put up with bad beer if I'm with friends and that's part of the enjoyment of being there. I've experienced a box at the footy before, and you know…it didn't really feel like the footy.

I've related the experience a few years ago, so I'm not ashamed to admit it was an Eagles game. One of the wife's clients invited her and she wouldn't allow me to send our apologies with the words "Pig's Arse" in it. Something to do with not losing business or some such inconvenience. It was dull. A dull game against Melbourne. A game I didn't really care about, and a crowd that only got excited when (now) delisted or departed players that they recognised, got hold of the ball. I came away with a sense that all stereotypes about WC supporters were stereotypes for good reason and built on solid foundation.

My workplace has had boxes at the rugby for a couple of Force games as well. A game I can take or leave to be honest, and Subiaco is not a good ground for watching it anyway. Fireworks after Tries I can well do without. We were in with Liam Bartlett one time, just before he jumped over to 6PR. Russell Woolf wasn't invited but stumbled in at half time on his media pass. I shouted him some free beers (I'm nothing but a generous host) and we drunkenly ragged Liam about the 6PR rumours. He deadpanned the lot. Now I know Liam is not a great friend of this board; he's not carried himself with the demeanour expected of a real Freo supporter, but jees, he gets into his sport. He treated the box like it was the first row on the boundary. I enjoyed myself in spite of the game.

So, I'm ambivalent about going to a game I actually care about in a work situation. I love my football and in the past have tended to get over-excited and a bit carried away. That's settled down in the last couple of years, what with kids and the things that brings into your life, but I still tend to get involved without realising it. Now, I'm not that concerned about getting vocal, what the bosses and clients will think etc. But in my limited experience of boxes, few people get into the game anywhere near the extent the crowd (or Liam Bartlett) does. And most of the invitees will be Eagles supporters. With the team Worsfold is putting on the ground it could be a rout, the game therefore will be as dull as a shellacking of the Western Force, and the smugness will be ill fitting and churlish. And it's only the nab cup for fricks sake.

Yet, sitting with my mates I could still have a good time whatever happens. This is unknown territory. I'll report back if the evening is eventful.
