Mistimed interchanges

Extract from Cometti's blog on The West's website:
"....But back to the Dockers, where a couple of mistimed interchanges and a few bad bounces conspired to do them in.."
Can anybody expand on these "interchanges"? When were they and who was involved?

Not sure what DD was referring to, but there has been some concern over the 'creative' interchanging some clubs (ie Colonwood) are performing - the taking off of 4 players from the forward zone when the team is in defense (or visa-versa), and then rushing on 4 new guys when the other team rebound. Effectively it produces a massive counter-flood that catches the opposition out.
From what was said on Footy Confidential this week, it has become noticeable and some coaches (ie Mad Mick) are building it into their training exercises.
I like the idea - if (for instance) you can get Elvis and Tazza to control the ball inside the defensive 50, link it up to a strong sure mark (where the problem sets in a bit for Freo, but let's say Justin Longmuir for now), Pav, Hill, Bally and Mayne come out of the interchange - Pav takes the next mark and allows the other 3 to skedaddle into the forward 50.....at best it would be a 3 fresh vs 2 puffed defender situation.
Garry Lyon picked it up from last weekend's Colonwood game - DD would, with all his innovative thinking, would be paraphrasing what Lyon noticed.

I listened to the game on SEN and one of the commentators mentioned that Goddard came onto the ground too early in one interchange and should of been penalised. I can't remember when exactly, pretty sure it was sometime in the second half.

Resting players can not come on through the interchange gates until a player comes off the field, this presents an opportunity to both teams.
It all comes down to picking the turnover 15 seconds in advance and having the suitable players close to the gate so they can run off.
Sounds like a good strategy for one interchange but I can't see it working too well for 4.

Heh. Against Geelong, De boer came on to the ground through the interchange, realised he was unmarked and actually un-noticed, squatted down on the ground in the shadows in an effort to remain unmarked for a bit longer, then presented a lead and got the ball. It was hilarious to those of us in 101 and I presume 102.
Made me long for the days of the 'camoflague' green away jumper though.

I was at the Geelong v Hawks game on Easter Monday. Several times the Hawks didn't immediately replace the player coming off, so for a short period of time they had 17 men on the field with the 18th man waiting to come on to the ground at a time when they were unmarked and able to provide a link from defence to attack.
