A Bridge Too Far

"I think all teenagers should be put through the military and the discipline of life and pay respect to this country through that sort of training," Harvey said.

It certainly would straighten some of these unkempt youngsters out and put them on a better track but I reckon stick to the process and focus on the footy.

These are nasty pics, but I'm more concerned about the one of Harves in the article. It looks like he's growing some .. um ... oh, let's just forget it, okay??

I did national service. I benefited from this experience in many ways.

I lectured guys at a tertiary institution who had done national service in Vietnam. The most obvious thing was how self-disciplined these young men were. They were always respectful but questioning. They were always the most thorough in their preperation of assignments and the most prompt in the submission of their work.

There is much to be said for national service for both men and women. It teaches you never to take things for granted. It teaches you to understand that personal effort is required to achieve success. And the developed mateship is up-lifting.

Enough of the sermon. But note Harvs has a point as we approach Anzac Day.

That's to pin his medals on, Zorro.

I'm not concerned about young punks being sent through the killbot factory, dddocker (which incidentally is zorro's new nickman for Mark Harvey) or Mark Harvey's desire to reform society by using one of the popular plots from 1980's teen comedies but what do you reckon he's going to be answering questions about for the rest of the week instead of talking about how much better Sandilands is than the next best ruckman.

Unless it's a cunning distraction because Fremantle lost on the weekend. Look! A soldier cleverly disguised as a bear so he can infiltrate the enemy.

All hail the Harvey Youth.

I think it was a great way for Harvs to point out that the ANZAC game at Subi is Freo's.

My grandad was in the forces too; just like Harves, I reckon that clues me up nicely to know what the kids need.

The thing is, the military doesn't want to be a publicly funded finishing school for for the unwashed, unkempt or uninterested. They've got others things to do.

People who think there's something wrong with the kids of today, simply watch too much TV.

I really hope this is some kind of brilliant media diversion on Harv's part, because otherwise it's a morality that is as valid as him sharing why he obviously thinks Coke is better than Pepsi.

So you question Harvey's sincerity in making the comments Shane? He has some ulterior motive? Shame on you. Anyway he doesn't need to tell the world that Sandi is the best ruckman in the comp. Everyone with any brains knows that.

probably for the best sandi was never in the military. he'd be a sitting duck for enemy iraqis.... even when he's stationed in australia.

I reckon it's a subtle message to the young players. Thank goodness you're playing footy instead of being in the military. Make the most of your opportunities on the ground. Much more subtle than trotting out war stories like the other coaches will be doing. Brilliant stuff.

I'm really impressed by the depth of respect shown to the HMAS Sydney. Not!

Really, do these people have enough respect for those sailors to even go to the effort to learn something about them? HMAS Sydney was a light cruiser, not a battleship. And just to help you out Mr Goodes, they didn't lose 645 men and 'women' that day. Women didn't serve on warships in WW2.

If you are going to bang on about respect and not run it as a cheap marketing exercise, try having at least a little understanding of what happened to those blokes. Try showing a little genuine respect!
