Shorter games?

Ross Lyon has thrown up the idea.

I tend to like it. Whether its 45 minute halves or shorter quarters.

I think it has much merit although the purists will obviously hate the idea.

I realise football is about athleticism etc etc but if changes dont occur soon it will simply be a game dominated by athletic freaks rather then skillful players.

Players like Haselby will never get a run in 10 years time, simply because they cant run out the bleep test!

You were spruiking some other more feminine sport here the other day and now here you are trying to sell an idea straight from the mouth of the knock kneed simpering flange himself...

the game will adapt. It always does. People were saying a few years back exactly what you're regurgitating now... and players like Barlow and Podsiadly are the biggest news of the season.

Go figure.

Lyon is a girl! Tell him the game is 'traditionally' four quarters.

If thats too tough to deal with, there's a netball team in Melbourne he can coach!

Oh, wait! They have four quarters too. Looks like the lyoness is out of luck!

Ice hockey? They do like playing on slippery surfaces.

I don't buy it. Ross Lyon has thrown up something, but I don't know that it's an idea. Maybe has can start a new league for the alternasport he envisages.

The game is by no means dominated by skill-free athletes at the moment, and until it is I don't see the need to shorten it.

I do agree though that some type of substitution system is worth considering. Healthy players on the bench are a necessity, and having one or two sidelined early in a match can be a critical factor. Allowing one sub, and maybe having to use it before the 3rd quarter starts, would somewhat alleviate the effects of the problem I reckon.

Forget it - football is a spectator sport and the spectator don't want a Big Mac that's 20% less (even if we can eat the thing quicker). Serve it up, or like others have suggested, get into netball (you pussy).

We like the full Black Angus burger, with pickles and bacon.

Give me a break. I can't beleive the way Football is going. When I was playing and I kicked a goal there was no way I would sprint of the ground, I would probably lose momentum and focus. The AFL can be blamed for the pace of the game going up to a degree, by allowing quick kick ins from behinds; that has speeded up the game. I suggest we return to the old rule of no kickins til goal umps have casually waved their flags, giving players more time for recovery. The game has already been shortened from 25 minutes to 20 minutes.

Would players be prepared to play for less? Less ground time should mean less money to be fair? Lower membership and general admission prices? Not likely.

Leave the game alone please.

How about football for short people. Where are the equal rights people these days.

If they want to shorten the game take a few minutes off half time. It bores me to tears. On top of which it seems ridiculous that the players cool down so much that they need a five minute warm up session to get ready for the start of the second half. And for those who need the 1/2 time break to grab a beer or release the pressure from having grabbed too many beers, your problem is the crap facilties at Subi not the length of the break.

Maybe a couple of the players could come over and do some showtunes for you at half time to keep your interest. Diddums.

I also heard him say that point posts are just a hindrance; that the goal posts are too wobbly, so they should be joined by a horizontal stabilising bar about 2m up; that there should be a net to catch the balls so that they don't get into the crowd; that the game should be slowed down to a catatonic pace by only having 11 men on a team; that the high scores are ridiculous and a goal is a goal and should be one point. And that they should use a round ball, which the players aren't allowed to touch with their hands because the game is called "football".

Football games used to go for two or so days about 100 years ago, things change.

One day cricket was invented 40ish years ago, and now 20/20 is upon us and will eventually completely replace the one dayers, things change.

TV networks paying half a billion dollars to broadcast our game want high ratings and are in a constant battle with the AFL over the 8:30pm delayed start time for Friday night matches.

TV networks will never broadcast these matches earlier as customer satisfaction is outweighed by commercial interests, some things dont change.

I am getting too old to stay up to midnight, things change.

I think its time to shorten the game, again.
