Your Holiness, points difference is not equitable. Consider Port's game against the Roos today in Adelaide. Their scores in wet conditions should not be penalised in comparison for the near perfect conditions at Subiaco Oval.

It's like letting paedophile priests get off Scott-free in Germany and punishing the carp out of them in Ireland.

Not one of you number crunching knobbers (Shane started it, I like it a lot) followed protocol here - we scored CXVII to their LXII, which gives us ii place on the ladder.

Savouring it is what the "Ooftits" should be doing.

It might be best to attach a footnote congratulating them on what they've managed to achieve so far in the 2010 season, but not to get carried away and expect to finish so high on the ladder.

With respect, Your Holiness, the city of churches system is better.

Total percentage for game is 200% allocated according to relative scores so

14 goals v 6 goals = 28 v 12 = 7 v 3 = 140% v 60%

Final percentage is the average of game percentages.

AFL percentage make a goal in a tight game equivalent to one in a shootout. Point difference tends to to overemphasise high scoring games, even though the relative margin may small. A four goal win is big around the 10 goal mark but not much at 20. The 200% system draws a line on each game so big wins count but don't dominate the final figure.

However, I won't be wasting my time campaigning for change. At the end of the season it's just one number against another.

The SA system just uses for/(for + against), rather than for / against. Still favours low scoring, rather than high scoring. Take 100 vs 80 or 80 vs 60. I prefer that the higher scoring game is the better one to watch, but 100/80 = 125% in AFL, 100/(100+80) = 55.5% in the SA form, 80/60 = 133% in AFL or 80/(80+60) = 57% in SA.

I first thought about this when Malthouse's defensive philosophy came in, and then again when the Adelaide/Saints/Tigers/Sydney basketball crap games happened. They were better off than the high scoring teams in terms of %.

And Jimb2, a goal scored in a tight game is worth more what a goal scored in a shootout - 1600/1594 = 100.4%, 2200/2194 = 100.3%

And Merc, in the current system, Port could get a benefit themselves if they can play a few low scoring games. And anyway, it's not like we have that many really wet games - and no more mud pits.

The AFL talks about making the game more free flowing and higher scoring, but the % system is actually encouraging the opposite. I want shootouts. I don't want flooding at all costs. A point saved is currently better than a point scored - it shouldn't be.
