If we we're elevating on last night alone, then it's Barlow followed by Pearce.
Barlow, 29 touches, and 9 marks (both team highs)
Pearce, 20 touches (6th), 8 marks (2nd) and 2 goals, one of them a supergoal.
trickier to measure the job that De Boer does, as a tagger, but he certainly wasn't in the play for much of the game.
But Harvey indicated during the week that spots would have to be earned, and players would have to get the runs on the board.
He re-itterated that in his post-match where he stated that Barlow would have to go on with it - one NAB cup game wasn't going to secure it for him.

Its a real shame we have a list clogger like Murphy still on the list when we'd love to elevate at least three if not four of our rookies. De Boer, Pearce and from the looks of last night Barlow all looked very comfortable in the big show. Silvagni seemed to look very comfortable as well. Tough decisions ahead. Unfortunately for Barlow I think DeBoer and Pearce have both been at it for an additional season.
I suppose that at least we have some depth if we get any long term injuries. We can only pick 22 players every week and there are a couple to come back into last nights extended team (Suban, Palmer, Tarrant).
Is Van Berlo a rookie or on the main list? He looked good in patches also.

Oh my god!
It's still over $2000.
what's going on? I thought 1 good NAB game was grounds for Brownlow favouratism these days?
I guess there must have been some other reason for Woosha drawing attention to his 18 year old sideshow...
What's that, a distraction!

I love mature age rookies they play every game like they're trying to stick-it-up every recruiter in the AFL for passing them over.
Barlow is Sam Mitchell-esque (if you're from the East Coast) and a little bit Hase if you're from Freo.
Don't envy the club if having to pick which two rookies to upgrade but it's nice to be in this situation when we look at this season and beyond.

Barlow may just be a great example of the type of recruit highlighted in Michael Lewis' fine book on baseball trading, "Moneyball". Premise of the coach in that book, Billy Beane was that we don't have the money to buy the flash players, we'd better draft guys who can play - and he threw out the traditional "get em young" recruiting out of high school in return for drafting low priced college athletes who can actually play the game as adults and who, like Barlow, are only too grateful to get a shot at the big time!
Interesting read if you have a quiet weekend.... not many of those to go until the season proper starts!!
Cheers
Stanno

Are we able to put up another rookie for Ruffles or is that already taken into account?

Ruffles was interviewed in the billy walker room yesterday and from his own mouth he should be right by week 6 (I have no idea if that is the official line) so that prevents him going on long term injury list I would think.

I've been tipping Barlow as our secret weapon like Broughton was last year.
He might seem slow but he pulled off a 2.88 20m at his draft screening. By comparison Hill is 2.83.
Having said that he does have an odd running style. I think we'll find he looks slow but the opposition don't seem to get to be able to their hands on him to tackle him.
