Knows where to go to get the footy and has a pretty good idea of what to do with it when he gets it. Easily one of the most effective players tonight. It's going to be tough to decide which rookie to elevate for Solly and which one to be the "nominated" rookie.

very good. Seemed to get shown up at times with the pace of the game but remained composed and efficient despite that. Very similar to Happy Gilmore without the rabbit in the headlights look.

I'm sure he was top possession winner tonight which isn't bad for a debut
Possessions were mostly contested as well and he seems a very physical player.

I think Gerard Healy was making a direct reference to Barlow when he said Freo's on ball division now has speed , strength, height and mobility as well as footy smarts.

Yup, the boy was good. I'm advancing an early claim to call him Eddie.

I---------------------------------------------------I
He was this good.

Liked what I saw. Barlow and most of the teams second efforts were good tonight. Few players still quite rusty, but hey we can only improve.

From the AFL website: click

Mature-age VFL recruit Michael Barlow, 22, made a convincing case for pre-season elevation with 29 possessions from Freo's midfield. Fellow rookies Alex Silvagni, and Clancee Pearce (20 possessions and two goals) also impressed.

With Dean Solomon retiring, Fremantle can elevate at least two rookies before the start of the season and Barlow, who averaged 30-possessions a game in the VFL last season, looks a likely choice.

“He’s unassuming, he sort of racked them up when playing at VFL level last year too, so he knows how to get the ball,” coach Mark Harvey said.

“The true test now comes when everyone has seen him and whether he can keep going. We’re really pleased with the way he went, particularly in close.”

I like the look of him and would like to see how he goes against a higher quality midfield. If he can sustain what he did tonight then we've picked ourselves another gem from the rookie draft.

I liked what I saw a whole lot, especially his ability to handpass so well from either side. Sign me up as a Barlow fan.

I was very impressed with Barlow. His mark in the 4th quarter from the kick in against two Melbourne players was pure strength and ability and will go a long way to develop confidence in fellow players that they can kick to him under pressure. He knew where to go regularly and that shows a footy brain (hard to teach); but he didn't play midfield, he mainly played off the HBF and was a very effective player. Liked Silvagni as well but if Barlow backs up like that at Etihad next week your would think De Boer and Barlow will be elevated with the two picks the Dockers had. Pearce and Silvagni will need to wait until the Draft as I'm sure the Dockers will prefer to elevate thoses guys with slim pickings that will be on offer!!

I'll state the obvious and then put in a word for Pearce here.

Barlow is another Mike (and plays like one). I've never even heard of the guy until we picked him up, he was impressive last night.

But check out Mike Pearce's stats - compare them with others that were in the game. Those that were at the game would know that the interchange bench was like a revolving door at Rick Hart's place during a Docker 'Cost + 5%' sale. Pearce mostly played in the back half - there wasn't much action back there with the Demons, thrown forward his passes were spot on, the kicks were like bullets to the belly. Then he had two whacks at the bigs from outside 50 (the first touched, the second sailed through and lifted the side at the end of the first half). Charging out of a melee in the forward flank, Rhino steamed south and thumped one from 40 of the side of his right boot.

The Dockers will waste this kid if they leave him on the Rookie List much longer.

You got a good point there Polly. I think pretty much all our rookies should be on the main list. Maybe the club if they are literally tossing a coin will put the longest serving rookie lister onto the main list. If Barlow is not upgraded, he will get a shot.
