A few years ago Gerard Neesham and some of his mates got together for an over catered barbie to discuss the future of WA footy. One of the issues on the agenda was membership of the local teams and after a bit of pressure the WAFC said they'd look into it. In 2001 the FreoMob formed to give them a hurry up and after a constitutional re-write the members at Freo have now got to vote on the board.

Voting information went out to members this week but there are plenty of other supporters who would like to know a bit about the people who might be running their footy club over the next year or two.

Paul Masten
Paul Masten is a commercial lawyer who is a Fremantle resident; Fremantle business proprietor; and passionate supporter of the Fremantle Football Club.
Paul says:
I have something to offer the Fremantle Football Club.
I advocate the development of a culture of excellence within the club whereby the benchmark for an acceptable season is nothing less than finals football.
I offer my nomination for the position of Director based on the following basic principals:

  • The embracement of the long standing and proven Fremantle football cluture;
  • The encouragement of a more pro-active involvement in the Fremantle community and a focus on the development of Western Australian football talent;
  • The development of a Fremantle Football Club Social Club which encourages the active participation of members;
  • The development of the club into a premier AFL football club in Western Australia and club of which members can be proud.

Gary Hasler
I am married, have three children and reside in North Fremantle. One of my passions in life is football. I have been re-elected for eight years as President of the North Fremantle Football Amateur Club and privileged to be a Life Member of this great club. I have also played 215 games of Amateur football. Through my role as President I understand what it takes to serve others in the community and I strongly believe in grass-roots football, together with the important role football plays in the wider community. I am the Managing Director of a wealth management group in Subiaco and have a comprehensive background in financial and risk management.
I have a strong desire to serve football at board level. I firmly believe that the balance between my business and football experiences will allow me to add significant value to the Fremantle Football Club and its members.

Mark Hevron
Having been born a short handball away from the East Fremantle Oval and growing up with Saturday afternoon at the footy with my father, brothers, uncles, aunts and cousins, my passion for Fremantle football was nurtured at a very early age. From the moment the Fremantle Football Club was born I was a supporter.
I am committed and passionate about what I do and the success of the people, organisations and companies that I work with. I intend to being that same desire and determination to the Fremantle Football Club to help keep it moving, confidently, along it's path to success.

Craig Thompson
I come from a fifth generation quality working class Fremantle family. I am the owner and managing director of a successful internationally recognised business headquartered in Fremantle with an annual turnover of $29.5 million. As a demonstration of my commitment to the FFC my company has been a corporate sponsor for many years but I also personally hold family membership whereby my wife and sons regularly attend games in the outer. My background and passion for the FFC to succeed makes be an ideal candidate. I consider myself a barometer of the passionate Fremantle supporter and am prepared to table the questions that need to be asked. I believe I can bring fresh, lateral thinking and most importantly common sense approach to the performance of the club. At 45 years old I still have the energy and drive required to make a difference.
I HAVE THE PASSION!

We all love that feeling of walking from the ground after a match, with the sight of a Fremantle winning goal in our mind, match points under our belt, and the Dockers passion alive. I want respect for our club off the field too. I will strive to achieve success on all fronts for out club. Together our goals are attainable, each season is a step closer to our ultimate goal, the AFL Cup. I want to be part of that successful plan. I have the expertise in management both private and public entities, with excellent personal communication skills. I believe we need to display courage, accountability, strength and a unified front. Decisions we are confident in. Decisions that give due regard to dignity, as well as success.
I promise you time, dedication, ability and passion.

Ben Allan

  • Captained the Fremantle Dockers for the club's first two years in the AFL.
  • In 2001 coached the Fremantle Football Club for the final 13 games of that season.
  • Played over 200 AFL and WAFL league games with the Fremantle Dockers and Hawthorn Football Club after starting his career at Claremont.
  • Won the Club Champion Award in the premiership year of 1991 and was selected in the All Australian team in both 1993 and 1994.

I have a keen desire to assist the club in it's endeavours to become a powerful on field team.
I believe it is important to have a varied cross section of experienced football people on the board to assist in the running of our club.
I acknowledge the responsibility that goes with being a member of the board and if elected will focus on achieving long term on field success.

As a passionate supporter I have a huge desire to see out club win greater respect and ultimately their first premiership. As a former Australian Champion in athletics and having represented WA in football I have a sound understanding of the needs of the coaching, players and administration staff, as they with the members support, prepare to win a premiership. I will help fulfil these needs.
I believe the Fremantle Football Club has a strong vision and focus for the future and it is my intention to help drive this vision at board level.
If elected I am committed to making a positive contribution to the club. I have the time necessary to help with any members concerns.

This time around there is only one spot up for grabs, with David Garic stepping aside and Les Everett being re-elected last year. The winning candidate will receive a 2 year term and their position will be up for election again at the end of 2007.

If you're over 18 and you've got a season ticket or a one of the other membership packages that included voting rights, then you are eligible to vote. The voting will be done by a postal Ballot, to be sent out to voting members on 11 November 2005 and voting closes on Wednesday 30 November.

The new board member will be toasted at the annual Members Meeting on 30 November 2005 at the Fremantle Shanty Town aka South Fremantle club rooms at 4 o'clock.
