After a joyous day seeing the mighty Swannies cut the Eagles down we were hoping for big things to continue into the night at Cannington Raceway. Sheriff Austin and Showground Larry were to make their much anticipated return to racing after a horrendous run of bad luck and injury.
Well the night started disappointingly and it didn?t improve. In fact it only got worse. Before a ball had been bowled, Sheriff Austin was scratched. He had pulled up sore from a gallop the previous day and had to go back to the sidelines where he has frustratingly been for the majority of his WA career. However, we still had Showground Larry flying the flag.
It was a big ask for Larry first up. He was in need of some miles in the legs and some race fitness and adding to the task it was a decent field he was lined up against. We were pleased to see Showground Larry make his WA debut last night but unfortunately it didn?t go according to plan. After the long and anxious wait in the on course kennels, he finally made an appearance at about 10pm. The dockerland Syndicate members weren?t expecting big things but we were hoping to get around safely, trouble free and uninjured. We didn?t land one of the above mentioned three hopes.
The Showground jumped nicely and was going to take a forward position on the rails heading around the first bend. From that point on it was disaster city. The rotten filthy five dog cannoned into Larry putting him in to the running rail. He bounced off the rail and tried to gain composure but his front legs were knocked from under him and he was in all sorts of trouble. The poor dog ricocheted from pillar to post and had the stuffing knocked out of him. He understandably never recovered in the run and knocked up finishing a distant sore and sorry and injured 6th. Larry will be a sore dog over the next few days but we?re hopeful it?s just general bruising and nothing of a more serious nature.
So the rough times continue for the dockerland members. There?s talk of Sheriff being ready for Saturday the 8th October. He will have constant treatment and will be hopefully fighting fit ready to trial on Monday the 3rd October. Larry will be looked at and gone over thoroughly to locate any injury. He will also have treatment on any area its needed.
