There?s an old saying. ?If you can?t draw a decent box then you shut the cattletruck up and bloody well win from the box you?ve been given.? Actually it?s not that old because I just made it up. I?d only just finished blowing up about not landing a decent box when Larry The Magnificent comes out and torches me by hitting the winners circle from the bugger of a box in the five. Adding insult to injury he?s jumped in at $13 and not a cent of mine was aboard.

The dockerland Syndicate?s superstar Showground Larry has continued his red hot recent form by saluting the judge first in the Sunkist Canning Stake Grade Five on Saturday night. Prior to the night Larry had chalked up a cheque in five of his last six runs. He jumped well from the unfavourable five box but as expected the early pace from the dogs on either side of him told out as they approached the first bend. Larry was looking like he was about to be sandwiched so if you backed him it was time to close your eyes and become a holy man for about five seconds. Some one better throw a few oxford scholars in the church plate next week because the Showground somehow made it around the bend trouble free. How he made it I?ve got no idea and I?m tipping Thomas would still be doubting it. Anyway down the back straight he was in fifth and looking to improve. He crossed the one dog and got to the fence. Using his mid race pace he shot up the rails passing Slick Secret while the fancied runners remained out in front by a couple of lengths. This played right into Larry?s hands as they took each other on bumping several times. The Showground had the camp on them. He stuck to his task on the fence and pushed right up behind the favourite Dosnell as Sir Tolerance checked out of it. A clever dog is this Larry as he took on the resemblance of NASCAR racing. He sat in the slip stream getting Dosnell to drag him along cheaply around the final bend. Then at the top of the home straight he pulled out and catapulted past the leader pinging home to pinch a very well deserved 1.2 length win. Cole Trickle couldn?t have done it better himself. It?s unusual for an Eagle fan to be dead on the money but race caller Peter O?Neill was spot on with his call on dockerlanders started to cheer as Larry went past the post. On course and all over the country the purple clad dockerland fans instantly celebrated and its highly doubtful they have stopped. It was a sensational win and one full of merit.

Cannington tipster and busted hump of a punter, Gary ?The Guru? Wilson phoned me during the week and told me Larry would run 74th. He told me Shane Watson for the Alan Border Medal was a better bet. Guru, sorry mate I missed it?where did the Showground finish? And while we?re having a crack at you, can you do us all a favour and stay away from any cricket betting. You?d stop Hussey at the minute!

Pete and Helen and the team including Nifty Nev and Glen ?The Foreman? Price have done a sensational job with Showground Larry. Also thanks to Michael for leading him out. Team Sayer has got him going beautifully just thriving at the minute and he continues to improve. There is more to the dog training game than just putting them round. Placing them in the right races is an art and a highly important one. Pete and Helen have that side of things covered exceptionally well, which is why we see Showground Larry engaged to run on Wednesday in the hope of possibly pinching an extra grade five before he graduates to the tough grade four class.

As a bargain buy, thanks to the assistance of ?Dazzler? Dan Biddle, and a dog that?s not blessed with brilliance; Showground Larry has proven to be a sensational pick up for the dockerland Syndicate. He has now amassed over $8,500 in Western Australia and a total of over $11,000 over all, almost $3,000 coming from Queensland when he was under the expertise of Tommy T Tzouvelis. With hopefully a minimum of six to nine good months racing still left in him he?s sure to continue tipping something into the dockerland coffers.

Good on the members who got out there Saturday night and got involved. No doubt you?re glad you made it. Hopefully some of you can get out there again this Wednesday and kick Larry home for a repeat performance. You don?t have to be a member to get in on the festivities. If you just want get out to Cannington and have a bit of fun then by all means do so. The members are a great bunch and those out there will welcome you in.
