Fremantle don’t win at the MCG all that often but, when they do, it’s usually against Melbourne. Fremantle have had 9 wins at the MCG and  4 of them have been against Melbourne. Sure, they may have lost 6 other games to Melbourne at the MCG but it’s just being a smart arse to point that sort of figure out. Fremantle have won three of their last 5 games against Melbourne at the MCG, losing one of the two losses by just 6 points. Unfortunately last time they met there, the Demons won by 63 points - but once again, mentioning that is just smart arsery.

But last year when the two sides met it was in Perth. Fremantle weren’t engaged in any of their rebuilding shenanigans and were sitting up in the top 4 looking down at some of the less talented football clubs. They weren’t without their injury worries though, so the Dockers set Melbourne a lead in the first half and then sat back and watched as the Demons attempted to chase it down. It was a scintillating display of football by Fremantle in the first quarter - high marks, long goals, bone crunching hits on feeble Melbourne players but by half time the Dockers had had enough and packed up for the day. Unhindered by an opposition, Melbourne fought back to get within a kick of the lead but the cool heads of the Dockers prevailed as they switched back on, got the ball into Hayden Ballantyne's hands and sat back once again to enjoy watching him celebrate kicking the winning goal.

Paul Duffield  had the most of the footy for Freo with 22 disposals with Colin Sylvia bettering him with 23 for the Dees. Hayden Ballantyne kicked 4 goals, Liam Jurrah kicked a couple. The Clinton Wolf Medal votes were uncontroversial, giving Hayden Ballantyne the 3, Paul Duffield the 2 and Luke McPharlin the 1 while the umpires snuck Sylvia and Anthony Morabito for the placings.

A year earlier at the MCG wasn’t the Dockers’ finest hour.  The only good thing to come out of the match from a purple perspective was Anthony Morabito after Fremantle improved their draft pick dramatically.  Coming off a stirring win against Port Adelaide, Fremantle lacked some poise in the difficult Melbourne conditions and gave the Demons their fourth win of the season. The Dockers started well but Melbourne adapted better to the wet ball to get on top in the second quarter, building up to a dominant third and cruising in for a 63 point win. Paul Hasleby and Matthew Pavlich tried to carry their side, getting most of the ball while Luke McPharlin did his bit in front of goals but they were out gunned by Aaron Davey with the footy and Liam Jurrah in front of goals.  David Mundy, Marcus Drum and Luke McPharlin picked up the Clinton Wolf Medal votes in what would have been controversial circumstances if anyone had cared.

2008 wasn’t a great era for Fremantle either.  When Fremantle were struggling early in the season, the trip to Melbourne to play the home town side was considered a welcome relief. Fremantle headed over to play the Demons, confident of a win and hoping to use the match to play themselves back into form. By golly it worked too. The Dockers played their best footy of the season to that point, by half time were nearly 10 goals up and had earned a short break before the anticipated second halve drubbing. But some sort of Jodie Foster Freaky Friday style action took place during the break and Melbourne returned a football side, closed the gap then embarrassed the Dockers with a six point win.

Fremantle played like millionaires in the first half - beautiful skills, speed to burn and they appeared to be everywhere. They conceded just 3 goals and kicked 11 of their own. But it all went wrong after half time. The Demons returned from the break a side who remembered how to play football and Fremantle had clocked off for the afternoon. Melbourne put through 5 unanswered goals in the third term, then 4 to open and close the last to win 17.17 (119) to 15.23(113). Brock McLean tore Fremantle up with his 28 possessions. Dean Solomon had the most touches for Fremantle with 21. Matthew Pavlich kicked 5.5 for the Dockers while Austin Wonaeamirri played the best game of his career, kicking 4 goals. McLean, Pavlich and Jeff White were awarded the Brownlow votes. Pavlich, Garrick Ibbotson and Dean Solomon were awarded the Clinton Wolf Medal votes...in controversial circumstances.

Fremantle’s last win over the Demons, or anyone else for that matter, at the MCG was in Round 4, 2007. The Dockers had started the season with the handbrake on after a pre-season crucifixion at the tribunal putting half their side out of action, and had lost their first three games. On top of that they had had a stressful week, with Josh Carr staring down a lengthy suspension brought on by Daniel Chick's imagination and Des Headland in a bit of trouble for beating the crap out of an Eagles player who claimed to have spent the night with his six year old daughter.

Des got a surprisingly light sentence and made the most of things by leading his team mates in a comprehensive shellacking of the Melbourne Football Club. All the Freo stars hit form, Hasleby, Pavlich, Hayden and Old Man McManus, dominating all over the ground to have the game in the bag by half time before cruising into a 45 point win. Pavlich kicked 6 goals, Headland and Webster kicked 6 between them but no one is quite sure of the exact distribution. Lynden Dunn and Brad Miller kicked 3 each for Melbourne. Adam Yze had 38 touches with Paul Hasleby hot on his tail with 37. The Clinton Wolf Medal Votes went the way of Headland, Hasleby and Pavlich in the least controversial circumstances of the season.

Last week, Melbourne ran into a bit of trouble. The trouble was called Collingwood and the bit got up to around 88 points. 75,000 people saw them kicked 6 goals for the afternoon. It was their 4th loss from their last 5 games with a win the week before against the lowly Essendon being declared a turning point for the club and breaking their losing streak They have won 4 matches for the season but are still up as high as 10th on the ladder.

Fremantle are coming off a triumphant win over the highly fancied Essendon in what appears to be a turning point for the club, after a short run of unlucky losses. Fremantle have won 6 games for the season and are secure in the top 8, two wins outside the top 4.
