| Matthew Pavlich has fallen short of bringing home Fremantle's first Brownlow Medal but one of Fremantle's many exports has done the job for him, with former East Fremantle champion Ben Cousins sneaking home over another East Freo product, Daniel Kerr, by 1 vote. Cousins is the third former Shark to win the Brownlow Medal in the past 6 years which bodes well for Paul Hasleby in a couple of years time. | Like a scene in a nightclub stairwell, the two former Sharks went toe to toe in the last few rounds, with Cousins knowing freezing like a bunny in the headlights meant he was locked away on 20 votes and Kerr coming up behind him fast. Meanwhile Pavlich, now a Shark himself, needed to perform the vote getting equivalent of his last quarter against the Kangaroos back in 2003 to try and snake a draw. He couldn't manage it, but was more than happy to see a fellow East Freo boy getting the medal hung around his neck.
Pavlich was given the official BOG title in 4 games but struggled to get noticed when he wasn't pulling down the collective pants of the opposition. Pav couldn't score a vote after taking a ridiculous 18 marks in the Round 5 game against Carlton so his entry to the tally board came with three votes in the Dockers awe inspiring win against Melbourne at the MCG in Round 6. He followed that up with another 3 against Collingwood the next week when Fremantle re-wrote the record books. Then he managed to pick up 2 in the Dockers less than impressive match against Essendon before he and the team had what we'll politely refer to as a quiet spell.
With the wheels back on after the mid-season break, Pav polled another 3 votes after going berserk in the second half against Adelaide, kicking 8 goals to nearly snatch an improbable victory. He picked up his last votes in Round 16 against Carlton with BOG for his 9 goals.
The other big vote getters for Fremantle were Paul Hasleby, who managed to pick up 12 votes in what most would consider his worst season since his Norwich Rising Star Medal debut. When he recovers from injury next year, he's expected to poll nine hundred and seventy two votes.
Heath Black burst out of the blocks early with two best on grounds in the first 5 rounds but as his hair cut got sillier, the umpires thumbed their noses at him and he finished with 8 votes along with Josh Carr and Peter Bell.
Twelve Dockers polled votes in all, with the others getting their name mention on the telly - Jeff Famer (4), Troy Cook (4), Byron Schammer (3), Justin Longmuir (3), Matthew Carr (2), Des Headland (2) and Aaron Sandilands (1).
