TOPIC: Who signed my jumper?

Hi folks, I recently came in to possession of a framed Dockers jumper from the early 2000s and I've been trying to figure out who signed it and what year it's from. There's a few that I can't work out so I thought I'd ask the experts (that's you guys).

I think it's probably from 2002 but see what you think. There's two signatures that look like number 31 (# 11 and 13) and I can't make out either.

If anyone can fill in some blanks or confirm the question marks I'd be very grateful.

1 - 7
2 - 29 Matthew Pavlich
3 - 40 Brad Bootsma
4 - 46?
5 - 43 Roger Hayden
6 - 15 Luke McPharlin?
7 - 18?
8 - 38 Ben Cunningham?
9 - 30 Leigh Brown?
10 - 14 Antoni Grover
11 - 31?
12 - 36 Andrew Browne?
13 - 31?
14 - 27 Graham Polak
15 - 42 Robbie Haddrill
16 - 3?
17 - 17 Adam McPhee
18 - 20? Justin Longmuir?
19 - 4 Paul Hasleby
20 - 25 Jason Norrish
21 - 10 Troy Cook
22 - 22 Scott Thornton
23 - 6 Dion Woods
24 - 39 Daniel Haines

With regards to the question marked entries, I believe:

1. Jeff Farmer. He did wear no.7 in 2002 before switching to his customary no. 33 in '03. (Andrew Shipp wore no. 33 in '02).

4. A messy Clive Waterhouse (no. 26).

6. Luke McPharlin. He wore no. 15 in 2002 before switching to no. 18 in '03. (Brendan Fewster wore no. 18 in '02).

7. Brendan Fewster.

8. Ben Cunningham.

9. Leigh Brown.

11. Andrew Siegert (no. 35).

12 Andrew Browne.

13. Simon Easthaugh wore no. 31 in 2002 before passing it on to Sandi.

18. Justin Longmuir.

Which leaves 16.

It definitely ends in a 3.
In 2002 no. 3 belonged to Daniel Metropolis.
That year we had no no.13, no. 23 was Shane Parker, no. 33 was Andrew Shipp and no. 43 was Roger Hayden.
It clearly isn't Shipp or Hayden so I would suggest it's a messy Danny Metropolis although Shane Parker got votes from the Russian judge.

Thanks heaps guys, that's fantastic.

I think you're probably right about Daniel Metropolis, Fre-doh, although it's hard to see his name in it - even if I squint real hard. I finally found a footy record with a full team list for 2002 and there's no-one else it could be except maybe Luke Webster. Could that be a 37 gone wrong?

Adam Butler, born 4/3/1982, 189cms, 83 kgs.

Picked up in the 1999 AFL Draft (no.46) from Murray Bushrangers.

Senior list 2000/2001. No games for Freo. Sadly he couldn't quite break into our mighty wooden spoon winning team.

Played 18 games for South Fremantle before returning to Victoria to spread the news of the juggernaut emerging here*. He played 12 reserves games for Carlton in 2002 and seniors for Williamstown in the VFL in 2003. He was a member of their '03 premiership winning reserves team playing out of a back pocket. Their senior team also won a flag that season, not surprising considering they had '02 AFL GF players Betheras, McKee, Molloy and Freeborn and '03 AFL GF player Tristen Walker, not to mention a couple of future useful types named Nick Maxwell and Dane Swan.

* Butler was obviously a Victorian spy sent here to provide reconnaissance to the dark forces east of the rabbit proof fence. Freo hierarchy were not fooled in the least and wisely adopted a 'lets lie low' policy for the next decade to throw the Vics off the scent.

The jumper is definitely 2002. Farmer and McPharlin's first season with Freo and McPhee's last until he returned from the wilderness in 2010.

Would agree that you can narrow it down to 2002, but is it a game day home jumper. 24 players? Regulars like Croad and Bell not present on the jumper, and Bootsma didn't play a game that year. So maybe not, though it could be from a pre-season game.

As you probably don't want 16 to be Daniel Metropolis (who also never played a game that year), could that 3 be actually a 2 (ignore the faintest line at the base) with a 1 next to it (both slightly at an angle). 21 - Would make it Troy Longmuir, and the match of letters no more or less compatible with the signature.

that's the thing with clive, his signature on the previous jumper was immaculate.

I don't know much about it's origins - there's a "#60" written on the back in the corner, so my guess is it was off the jumper signing production line and they just grabbed whoever was hanging around in the lobby.

I like the Troy Longmuir angle, although that 2 looks more like a kind of squiggly (3-shaped) 1 to me. With that other 1 you mention that would make it 11 - Dale Kickett. This is getting better and better....
