Preseason = resting players, playing kids, experiments
Round 1 = real competition for spots in our best 22
ie I think we'll see a much better display in the H&A season, but let's not get ahead of ourselves... we've got quite a few players coming back from long injuries who will need more time to get back into playing at the top level (Johnson, Crowley, Palmer, etc)

It was a bleedin' scratch match, folks!
All the same , watch some version of the following sentence appear on the back page of Mon's West:
Following Fremantle's form slump on the back of consecutive losses, speculation is mounting on coach Mark Harvey's future.

See, I reckon you're half joking there but in light of their work so far this weekend, it's hard to image it taking till Monday.
Friday Morning: Freo will see Geelong mean business
Geelong will confront Fremantle with 19 of their 22 premiership players at Fremantle Oval tomorrow.
The Cats will only be missing the retired Tom Harley, and the injured Max Rooke and Joel Corey from a squad of 24, signalling an intent to use the match as a full dress rehearsal for round one against Essendon after losing a week's preparation to Melbourne's freak storms last week.
Saturday Afternoon: Undermanned Cats stun Dockers
Reigning AFL premiers Geelong have overcome a personnel disadvantage and a spirited first half from the Dockers at Fremantle Oval today to record a morale-boosting 31-point victory on the eve of the home-and-away season.

The Cats had a week off last week due to their game being cancelled because of the weather, so I don't know whether you might spin that in our favour or against us. They may have been champing at the bit to go full-on and may have had more petrol for the 2nd half, or you might think that their skills could have been a bit rusty because of their lack of match time.
Here's a couple of reports from Haggis in the Sunday Crimes. Neither is too negative but he falls short of claiming a Dockers win against the Cats (using the same logic re: Slime V Cats Game played @ Subiaco during the 2009 season) though he does quote Harv's as saying: "We actually won 3 quarters...."

Ah, we lost Tarrant and Johnson just before half time, that'll make a difference.

What happened to the Dockers in the third quarter?
Gary Ablett Jnr is what happened. The crowd was giving it to him but boy did he come out firing. In the first 15 minutes of the third he was worth the free entry. Normally not a fan, but today he was exceptional for about 15 minutes which turned the game on its head.
We missed too many marksand we fumbled alot which put us under pressure. Preseason, I keep telling myself and hopefully the fumbles will quickly disappear.
Not a bad game to watch but hope nobody wanted an icecream in a hurry.

I posted a long review earlier and managed to lose it somewhere in cyberspace but the gist of it was that hard to believe though it is, Wizfan hates Gablett more than me.
Apart from that, im still drinking.

"Undermanned Cats" - I thought this was one of your specials Shane, so you can imagine my surprise when I discovered it was in fact a real story.
Those poor cats, must be real tough when you've only got 19 of your premiership 22 available.

Wiz. If you think it hasn't already started get hold of a copy of the footy liftout from Fridays paper and read Ray Wilson's article on the 2 local coaches.

From some of the comments made earlier it's the age old problem of "skills" and "decision making". I hope these perennial problems are addressed before Round 1.
Lots of young new players in the team so, like many have said, periods of poor team play and uncertainty are to be expected. Sounds like the third quarter was such a period.
I have the faith so I predict much improved performances as the season develops and as confidence and awareness with/of team mates increases. Hence there should be a more instinctive (quicker) flow in ball movement. The Western Bulldogs exemplify what I'm getting at. Have a look at the NAB GF for what I mean.
