Suban
#299565
Looking at the last few posts about our best team/ round one team I keep noticing Suban has been placed in just about every spot on the oval.

Where does he best fit?

He was one of my favorite players last year and I have really high hopes for him, but I'm just not sure where we are going to get the best out of him.

I think he and Roger running off the half back line could be a pretty exciting attacking back line. But if they were to both take off it would leave us pretty open on the rebound.

I loved last year seeing him running from 50 out and kicking goals, but honestly I think there are better 'forwards' than him that should be doing that role.

Anyway, just interested to see where you think he can really lock down a spot over the next couple of seasons.

Far enough up the ground so he can spot up forwards well inside the 50 and even have the odd long range shot at goal. He'll be tough and hard at it wherever he is, but his great strength is the speed and penetration of his kicking - valuable anywhere, but more so going toward goals than coming out of defense.

Where did Heath Black play? Put him there.

I reckon Suban will ultimately end up playing on the ball, and with his kicking ability he will push forward to snag a goal or two every game. But it won't happen this year. I think the club will continue to play him out of a back pocket, ala Jason Akermanis in 1999, for his development into a midfielder, ala Brownlow medalist Jason Akermanis in 2001.

Maybe I just haven't seen him in the centre enough yet. But I just don't see him as a genuine midfielder. And I think we the other midfielders we have in the side, especially the young guys who are going to dominate in the 3 years, I just don't see him doing anything other than filling holes in the middle though.

Just like what I was saying though, so far everyone prerfers him somewhere diffrent.
Has ever said what he thinks his strenght/ posistion is?

We didn't have Rog for much of last year and we've added McPhee. If Scos gets a run, he can play tight defence but knows how to attack from the backline as well.

Suban was 4th for Freo in rebound 50s last year (48), but I'm hoping our defensive depth allows him to play more of the midfield attacking role that zorro mentioned, especially with the forward line we're hoping to field this year.

half-back general ala Luke Hodge in 2008

Hayden is the better rebounding defender, but Suban has that rare talent of spotting a man 50m down the feild and sending the ball straight to his chest, turning a "rebound" into an "attack".
Duffield is a good leader back there, his skills are perfect, whcih is what you need. But he can't kick the long ball like the Subanator can.

Is the reasoning behind Suban playing the backline the same reason Harvs has Hill playing there as well?

Sure he floats forward as an linkman but most games I notice Hill seems to start behind the ball...??

starting hill behind like that means he can (with the correct delivery) be getting hold of the ball when he's in full flight. think of how that could work in our favour
