It's Time

I think the Dockers have got to a stage in their history where a big decision needs to be made.

I, along with other supporters, am of the opinion that the best we can achieve this season is probably just outside the top 8 or with a bit of luck 7th or 8th.

In subsequent years we should have a good enough team to make the top 4 and higher rewards.

To keep this momentum going we surely need continuity in our coaching group for at least the next 2 years. I would say more. Any change of coach over this period would put our plan back at least 12 months, probably more while new team plans and assistant coaches were bedded in.

Any thing less than top 8 this year will have the media and some of our supporters baying for Harvey’s blood.

A few years ago Geelong were told by the experts in the media that Thompson couldn’t coach and they would have to sack him and start again. In response they signed him up for three years, told the media, supporters and players that he was the best man for the job, no more arguments thanks.

Result, 3 grand finals and 2 premierships.

I think the Management of our club need to step up to the mark, support the work that Harves and his match committee have done with the selection and grooming of our player group, and sign him up for 2 -3 years.

I'm more than confident Harves will get another contract near the end of the season and just as confident he is the right man for the job.

To get rid of him now would mean those in charge see the direction we are going as the wrong one and in turn want to start over. This just wont happen. We have a good young side which is developing and growing. They are learning the coaches plans and becoming true AFL standard players.

It would take an absolute catastrophe for Harves to get the sack. He'll be here for 2 more minimum, put your house on it.

Couldn't agree more. Harvey has put in the hard yards and stripped the list back. It's now time to give him a couple of years to see that plan come to fruition. I for one am sick of standing on the sidelines watching other teams play finals.

Count me in as a supporter of re signing Mark.

In all honesty, apart from drafting Mcfly back he hasn't done too much wrong in the last 2 seasons.

I've got a stingy mattress outback...

But Harves will stick around.

The current plan was not conceived by one man alone. If Harvs gets the flick, there's a few others who need to follow him.

If the Club doesn't renew Harvey's contract we will condemn ourselves to another round of "We are going to rebuild the Club....and...we will be putting in place a 5 year plan".
As a day 1er I want success as much as the rest of the supporters. I have no doubt we are on the rise. MH has done the rebuilding, and I am really liking what I am seeing. Bring on 2010.

As head coach, the buck stops with Harvs and he wouldn't have it any other way. We would be bonkers to let him go but if he gets the flick, a new coach will likely bring in a few assistants but rarely do they throw out all the available resources so chances are they would keep an assistant or two on.

The only reason we are talking about this is the media.

Make no mistake, Harvs is his own man. He came over to Freo and took the job to do things his own way. He's not a puppet coach like Bailey is or like Laidley was when NM first appointed him. These guys were brought in as low salary puppets cos they would do as instructed. Laidley outgrew the role and cut the strings.

Hardwick didn't get the Essendon job because he had different ideas than the board and wouldn't be a puppet.

Richmond will probably still be carp, but there won't be any confusion over who's running the show.

Im with you Dockerbill.Harves has built this team and he will live or die by its results. Some may say its too early to re-sign him,but I believe it would just confirm what most of us think, and that is that Harves is the man to bring us long lasting success...

He is, lets face it, the new Sheedy.

Not as voluble, but just as irreverently bonkers in his own way, and the same iconoclastic coaching genius.

He'll be with us for generations.

I wasn't talking about the assistants superswede. Who else has been responsible for much of the change in direction at the club over the last 2-3 years? Attempting a major rebuild isn't a decision to take lightly and the unity we have seen so far needs to stay strong - there will be more bumps in the road ahead, but ultimately, we should be heading in the right direction.
