Turning the ball over against St Kilda
#299205
How many times coming out of the backline on Sat did we turn it back over to St Kilda?

At kick outs the eighteen St Kilda players work as one to cover the space that their opponents will want to kick and lead into, we bounce the ball between pockets waiting for some space to appear. The players up the ground don’t move from the area they are guarding and we eventually cough it up.

The only thing that disappointed me last night was that we seem to be no closer in solving how we move the ball up the field against St Kilda; we seemed to be a little lost. I thought our defensive zones worked really well against them and that is encouraging but gee they pin us down in our own back half.

St Kilda is probably the best in the business and we are not the only team to suffer at their hands in this regard. But how do you beat their zone set up in the back half? Is the solution quick short sharp handballs that force them to come at you; get them out of their position and the structure will break down?

So it's a function of our kicking skills rather than their set up? You can be a really good kick but if you haven't got someone to kick it too!!!!

Did you see us knocking it around in the pockets time and time again?

'We' suggests everyone needs to do it. Kicking skills and game plans are over rated. It's amazing what happens when one bloke backs himself to beat another bloke.

You put Roger Hayden in the back line and suddenly there is a way out. Throw Michael Johnson and maybe Scott Thornton in and things start to open up, other players get freed up and pick up some confidence and everyone looks like a genius.

Did you see Saint Kilda knocking it around in the pockets time and time again?

The quick ball movement and attacking style used against North was not evident at all last night. There wasn't a lot of movement and many times the players in the last line of defence where left with no option but to kick it to a contest. I think the issue is more to do with personnel than structures. Get a few of those who dropped out back and the confidence and execution will improve.

We had someone to kick it to on many occasions coming out of the backline, but rarely used them, preferring to switch back and forth and then try to design some sort of slick, sexy handball plays to head into attack. Other teams loves this ****. To the Saints, it's their lifeblood.

Rogerbelly, that's got a lot to do with the opposition and how they set up when we are kicking in from a point.

Shane is saying that class players will back themselves and find a way out, I have seen that against most teams but not St Kilda.

I think you have got to take the game on and not have this preoccupation with retention of possession; risk losing possession to make some ground up the field. Take em on!

We've done really well kicking out from behinds this pre-season. It's the next kick that is the one where we're fragile. It's in these moments of fragility that we should go long down the wing, spoil over the line if we can't mark... and work from the reset.
