TOPIC: Morabito down back

KingKepler Morabito down back 9 years 6 months ago #1

KingKepler
Quick

Reasonably tall (189cm)

Stable at 93kg

Would run opponents ragged

Midfield already pretty good shape

Worth unleashing the beast down back?

There's a lot of logic in what you say, King. In fact, me and my mob were really keen to see him play back in 2011 (following the Pav career path), but, of course, the fates intervened. Not quite sure how he fits into the Lukey/ ZacD/ Johnno mix in the short term, but I reckon it gives Mora (who, after all, is still only 22) the best chance to grow into something really special.

On the subject of growing (here I climb onto a hobby-horse), how big is Mora – or for that matter, every AFL player? You've called him 189cm/93kg, King, but I've got him elsewhere as 191/97. Having seen him alongside Pav (192/100) I lean towards the latter. And, surely, Sandi hasn't stayed 122kg for the last decade, even if he's remained 211cm since we first clapped eyes on him when he was 18. Is Fyfe 186/81 or 190/88? Depends where you look.

Why doesn't the AFL/7/Foxtel have an official "Tale of the Tape" event before the start of each season?

Would generate lots of interest (careful analysis of the numbers by the girls, a bit of jocks in jocks perving for the lads) and introduce the players to the public for the season ahead.

At the very least it would be a bit of a pre-season giggle, and at least (and at last) we'd know what has changed and what we've got for the season.

Frankly I think Mora should the preferred replacement for everyone in 2015 including Sandi and Ballas.
Anyone out of the 22 for any reason at all, Mora comes in and takes their position.

My guess is they were cotton wooling him sustantially when he was ready to play. He's an automatic pick if fit, Shirley. I'd be suprised if he doesnt play most games next year.

Just got to get him through a preseason.

There are another two players that can play the role you are suggesting off the backline - Hill and Mundy. Both started there in the first place in their careers.

If Mora proves his fitness and consistency I would have him replace one of these two in the midfield and have Hill or Mundy off the backline. That's assuming we have Zac D, Johnno and McP there as well - not forgetting Silvagni or Smith.

Mzungu is another backline contender.

I'd rather see Mora up front.

He won't be in the middle very often he'll be a rotation in there when guys need a rest but to give him clean hills and straight lines half back or wing is ideal. Given quality in and around the back half I figure he takes the traditional half forward flank and runs that from the wing.

Put him in the backline, he can be the "Roger Hayden but a bit taller" player that we never knew we had.

He has the footy smarts to set us up the way Roger did when he ran the show back there, and as suggested running straight lines would not be a bad thing either.

Did anyone have to mention Hayden? I'm getting a severe attack of nostalgia.

I still get the shakes when I see the words "Morabito" and "down" used in the same sentence.

Can he clunk it? In my mind's eye I can picture him scything through four or five Geelong players three or so years back before nailing one, but no image registers when I think of his marking ability. Important if he's up front or down back.
