TOPIC: DuFFLe Squad Analysis 2024

Bizkit DuFFLe Squad Analysis 2024 1 month 2 weeks ago #1

Bizkit
As with most years, I’ve trawled through everyone’s DuFFLe side to pick their best team and see how they stack up against one another. Did you draft too heavily in the midfield or neglect your ruck stocks? Are you relying on a lot of youth to come through or is it the tried and true old heads that run your side?

Here’s the analysis and pre-season rankings for each side. Generally, the interchange is listed with what I see as the next best ruck, mid, for and def and a similar template for the emergencies so I could judge how the depth flowed. For the most part teams are ranked above/below each other on a flip of the coin so don’t take it to heart!

I) Bizkit - Sos Superstars
B: Sicily, Stewart
M: N Daicos, Parish, B Crouch
F: T Lynch, Daniher
R: Reeves
I: Soldo, Viney, Wright, Sexton
Em: Sweet, Fisher, Papley, Amon
Expected STC: L Parker, Holmes, Gunston, Setterfield
Analysis
As with every year, I have my own side on top because you have to back yourself in. I’m pretty happy with the side given we were at the bottom end of the draft once again. We haven’t missed out in the ruck as badly as prior years with Reeves a good young tap ruckman who has plenty of back up from Port’s new starting ruck. The midfield is close to if not the strongest in the comp lead by a growing Diacos and Parish while there’s a lot of competition for the 3rd mid spot. There are no better defenders than Sicily and Stewart while Sexton should take leaps and bounds in his new role to be a very good sub. The main worry is the forwardline as I took the gamble on Lynch making his way back from injury and Wright being fit. However, there’s lots of competent depth throughout the squad and injuries shouldn’t worry us too much.

II) Blockerhall – Willsie Aeroplane
B: Weitering, B Cox
M: Z Merrett, Laird, J Kelly
F: T Walker, B King
R: Darcy
I: Goldstein, Steele, L McDonald, Petracca
Em: Pittonet, Flanders, Higgins, Finlayson
Expected STC: Meek, Nash, Battle, Weller
Analysis
After jumping on Darcy with his first pick, Blocker went heavy on his midfield and it looks bloody potent. Managing to snare Kelly late was a massive pick up meaning he could well have the best midfield in the DuFFLe. The forwardline could be hit or miss with a lot of pressure on Tex to stay fit and carry the Crows. King has already shown he could blow up and was a shrewd selection with McDonald the only real back up. Without Weitering early and potentially Cox, Block could struggle down back but I’m sure there are good options like Steele to plug gaps.

III) Cookie - Ingredients
B: Coleman, Newman
M: Neale, Treloar, Dunkley
F: J Cameron, Greene
R: R Marshall
I: T De Koning, Prestia, Lewis, Houston
Em: Heeney, Mills, Bolton, Lloyd
Expected STC: Ballard, Ginnivan, Rowell, Wardlaw
Analysis
I wrote this before Coleman’s injury so throw Houston up into that spot and it shouldn’t effect the starting backline who will be made stronger when Mills gets back midseason. The old heads in the midfield should remain strong but do they still retain the same scoring power as in prior years? Cameron and Greene could be the most dominant forwardline in the comp and they’ll need to remain fit as the rest of the forwards don’t inspire me with too much confidence. In Marshall and De Koning, the side has a very assured ruck partnership resulting in an overall, strong side.

IV) MattyT – El Primero
B: Wilkie, Wood
M: Oliver, Sinclair, Whitfield
F: Langford, Mihocek
R: Nankervis
I: Stanley, Cerra, Dixon, Dale
Em: Pendlebury, Worpel, Emmett, Daniel
Expected STC: Florent, Ross, Keays, H Reid
Analysis
Matty has a well-balanced team in most areas that will have him charging into the finals. He has a good ruck with a competent back up but the depth ends there. Down back he has one of the best defenders in the comp with Wilkie alongside another strong performer in Wood. However, it’s Whitfield being a part of the line-up which pained me as I wanted him for my side next pick, it was tough to watch him go to Matty but that sures up both his midfield and defence. Oliver will be a gun regardless of off field issues but he may have to wait a week or two to enjoy the perks of Sinclair but there’s enough midfielders to cover early. Up forward I have high hopes for Langford while Mihocek and Dixon can carry the load.

V) FD1016 – Bay Bros
B: Andrews, Jo Clark
M: Coniglio, McLuggage, Rozee
F: C Curnow, Fritsch
R: Briggs
I: L Jackson, J Macrae, T Marshall, Ash
Em: D Martin, Hunter, Elliott, Crisp
Expected STC: Impey, Quaynor, Pickett, C Simpson
Analysis
I know FD went with Jackson with her first pick but he’s not my first-choice ruckman (even with Darcy missing). The star attraction of this side is the forwardline who have a fantastically straight kick and should get a LOT of shots on goal to keep the points flowing. The backline is similarly strong lead by marking machine Andrews and what I expect to be a quarter back role to Clark. Now if the midfield can get going, this side will do a lot of damage but that is a big if. Macrae provides nice coverage but only if he gets mid time at the Dogs.

VI) CaptDazza – Jolly Jokers
B: Da Moore, N Martin
M: Green, Gulden, Butters
F: Ugle-Hagan, C Cameron
R: McInerney
I: Fort, Liberatore, O Henry, Sheed
Em: Blicavs, Acres, Fogarty, Day
Expected STC: Lobb, Sanders, S Taylor
Analysis
Dazza has drafted some youthful bolters and I can see most of them coming off well. I was targeting Martin and have no doubt he’ll chop up down back while Moore is also quite reliable. Green could be the no1 mid this season while Gulden is also a chance to do the same. I’m less confident in the midfield depth but a strong ruckman will help a lot. The forwardline is similarly strong with Ugle-Hagan primed for a big year and Henry very unlucky not to get a starting gig over the old head Charlie.

VII) Moptop – White Rabbits
B: Kemp, Haynes
M: Serong, Dawson, Anderson
F: Amiss, Naughton
R: B Grundy
I: Xerri, M Crouch, Breust, Burton
Em: J James, Fyfe, Walters, McCarthy
Expected STC: Hopper, Lipinski, Stengle, Sholl
Analysis
I find Mop’s side difficult to rate, there’s genuine guns in most areas but I have questions over them at the same time. Grundy and Xerri are an intimidating combination but have not spent a lot of time on the park the past couple years. Similarly, Kemp and Haynes could rack up marks or just as easily go missing. I like the midfield who all have proven recent track records but a couple of years ago were nowhere near that top end midfield. Even up forward there’s a lot to love while not quite having all the runs on the board the very top tier of forwards can boast. This side could easily win it all or come last.

VIII) BomberTroy – El Bombres
B: Idun, Maynard
M: T Miller, J Daicos, Newcombe
F: M King, Lukosius
R: O’Brien
I: N Bryan, Ch Warner, Rachelle, Salem
Em: Wines, McGrath, Gresham, Saad
Expected STC: Sparrow, Ward, Caddy, Byrnes
Analysis
BT went with the consistent O’Brien in the ruck who shouldn’t need much help which is lucky since Nick Bryan is the 3rd in line at Essendon. I like the look of Max and Luko up forward but the depth is questionable with Rachelle and Gresham needing to step up if required. The midfield is full of potential with Daicos, Warner and Newcombe but I’m more interested in how the old heads of Miller and Wines come back. In defence it will be somewhat of a lottery on the day with Idun and Maynard my favourites to get the gig and perform.

IX) Straddo - Souls
B: Hewett, Vlaustin
M: Taranto, Docherty, T Kelly
F: Larkey, Hogan,
R: Witts
I: Moyle, M Johnson, H McKay, Ridley
Em: Naismith, Membrey, Riccardi, Noble
Expected STC: Read, Ashcroft, Johnson, Hustwaite
Analysis
Witts is as reliable a top scoring ruckman as there is and in Larkey, Hogan and McKay, the forwardline could be the best in the DuFFLe. Nailing those two positions has Straddo right in the mix for premiership glory. While the defense can also rack up numbers, each of them often suffer injury clouds so they’ll be looking for some luck there. The midfield is the weak point though and with the loss of Docherty last weekend, they will have a lot of work to do. That loss really damages their scoring output and there is very little depth to cover the loss of Doc.

X) Slammen Jnr – Slammen’s Saviours
B: Lu Ryan, Duncan
M: Sheezel, Walsh, Davies-Uniake
F: Allen, Schultz
R: Flynn
I: B Williams, T Mitchell, Van Rooyen, Laverde
Em: Samson, Langdon, Hipwood, De Goey
Expected STC: Blakey, Duggan, Ginbey, May
Analysis
Slammo Jnr went pretty well for their first draft but went with too much of an OOFTIT slant for my liking. That’s resulted in probably the worst ruck pairing in the comp but the question is if the rest of the side makes up for it. Down back I can see very good things on the horizon, especially with Duncan’s new quarter back role for Geelong. Up forward there’s a lot of weight from the blue and gold on Allen’s shoulders where it’ll be no different to Slammen’s Saviours. The midfield is young and boasts some ball magnets that will make the side formidable opponents. If Walsh can get his back right then he’s probably the best mid in the comp while Sheezel will push for that title in his second year. The depth is questionable though so we’ll see how injuries are managed.

XI) Boss Hog – Luke’s Dukes
B: Boak, Heppell
M: Brayshaw, Bontempelli, P Cripps
F: Hawkins, Weightman
R: English
I: Draper, Dangerfield, Stringer, Zorko
Em: M Cox, D Rioli, Switkowski, Wanganeen-Milera
Expected STC: Cordy, Banfield, Johannisen, A Pearce
Analysis
The Boss Hog had a little help on draft night and has assembled a pretty strong side. Between English, Draper and Cox their ruck is sorted and as strong as anyone’s. The midfield has some big name leaders headlined by our own Brayshaw but I do worry for the depth of the side. There’s a lot of older heads who could well be quite injury prone but in a large squad, there should be some cover. Down back will be a bit of a lottery and although I’ve trusted Heppell in the past, his job security as he ages is questionable. Then there’s a mixture of old heads and youth up forward who I think can do quite well.

XII) The Colonel – Carpark Trannies
B: Redman, S De Koning
M: H Young, B Scott, C Guthrie
F: Rankine, Bo Hill
R: Gawn
I: D Cameron, Short, Treacy, Raynor
Em: Horne-Francis, Henry, Milera, McKenzie
Expected STC: Fahey, Z Duursma
Analysis
The Colonel started off very strong with the addition of Gawn to the list who has more than able back up in Cameron. For the most part though, the rest of the side is underwhelming and will be relying on a lot of kids to step up. Up forward he will be hoping for Rankine and Bobby to have big years taking the next step or for Treacy to really lift his output and cement a spot in Freo’s forwardline. Down back there are some good options but none jump out as competition leaders just yet, they’ll have some work to do. Then we get to the midfield where there’s a big gamble on Young and Scott lifting their output dramatically. No Guthrie for half the season hurts and Horne-Francis will need to have a blinder of a year to help get The Colonel some wins.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Onya, Biz. I enjoy reading your analyses and it does give credence to my Kiss of Death* when we much align. Of course, you are wrong in aspects, but thoughtful and well-researched as always. ;-)
