Although I am delighted with Dockerland once again giving our lives that wonderful boost, I can’t see the DuFFLe continuing past this season. I’ll give you three reasons.
i) Number of participants. From either 16 or 18 DuFFLers from 2003 to 2020, our numbers have dropped away alarmingly. Notably only twelve last year and twelve this year. And we struggled to get the twelve.
ii) Enthusiasm. The number of times I submit teams for DuFFLers, that haven’t put one in, has increased markedly. It used to be a rare event. Not any more. Two weeks ago I entered five out of twelve teams. And this takes a fair amount of time. The missing team submissions need to be tackled as soon as possible after the deadline. Of course, I could leave the sides unchanged but that then skews the results and makes climbing the premiership ladder more dependent upon who competed against missing DuFFLers. It especially affects the results during bye rounds. Leave a side unchanged and they can score next to nothing.
iii) The presence Dockerland. Our beloved Dockerland has lost so many contributors over the past twelve months or so due to the outages. I hope that the site remains active and its patronage grows. I do think, however, that this is unlikely.
I’d like to see us finish off the season with enthusiasm, but then wave bye-bye to the DuFFLe. A farewell at a Freo pub would seem appropriate following the DuFFLe Grand Final. Perhaps we can score that small meeting room again in the Sail & Anchor?
