Once again, I’ve trawled through everyone’s DuFFLe side to pick their best team and see how they stack up against one another. Did you draft too heavily in the midfield or neglect your ruck stocks? Are you relying on a lot of youth to come through or is it the tried and true old heads that run your side?
Here’s the analysis and pre-season rankings for each side. Generally, the interchange is listed with what I see as the next best ruck, mid, for and def and a similar template for the emergencies so I could judge how the depth flowed. For the most part teams are ranked above/below each other on a flip of the coin so don’t take it to heart!
I) Bizkit - Sos Superstars
B: Sicily, Wilkie
M: N Daicos, Walsh, Taranto
F: H McKay, Naughton
R: B Grundy
I: L Jackson, J Macrae, T Lynch, Houston
Em: S de Koning, Mihocek, Short, Daniel
Expected STC: Ladhams, Salem, Docherty, T Mitchell
Analysis
As with every year, I have my own side on top because you have to back yourself in. This season we had a rare foray to the top of the draft order which we didn’t use particularly well as a flurry of ruckman fell while we hastily grabbed Naicos. Partnering him in what will go close to the strongest ever midfield in the DuFFLe are Walsh, Taranto and Macrae which should go a long way towards some big scores. Up forward we have some quality big men who may miss the big sticks but with the number of shots they generate, should kick plenty of bags. In defence, we have the high marking key defenders with depth galore on the bench. The weak point is the ruck but Grundy can certainly pop off on his day. We’ll be very hard to beat.
II) Straddo - Souls
B: M Wood, B Cox
M: Treloar, T Green, Oliver
F: S Darcy, Papley
R: O’Brien
I: L McAndrew, B Smith, McStay, Heeney
Em: Cerra, Membrey, O’Driscoll, Himmelberg
Expected STC: Logue, L Ashcroft, Sholl
Analysis
Not only did Straddo pick up the highest scoring ruckman from last year at pick 2, he managed to grab the highest scoring midfielder with his next pick. Now, I should temper that by pointing out the age and injury history of that midfielder but he went and picked a whole bunch of other quality midfielders to ensure that will not be a worry at all. The forwardline isn’t as impressive while still enjoying a variety of options who will keep the scoreboard ticking over. Down back he has some more speculative picks who should score quite well if everything goes to plan but it will be a tough decision to get the right players on the field in the right weeks. This side contends for the premiership.
III) Steele – The Sidebottoms
B: Barass, Dawson
M: Sheezel, N Martin, Butters
F: Larkey, Langford
R: D Cameron
I: Briggs, J Daicos, K Pickett, May
Em: Stanley, Hewett, Van Rooyen, Acres
Expected STC: E Richards, D Rioli, W Rioli, Comben
Analysis
Steele’s first attempt in the DuFFLe looks an incredibly good one and it would appear the old man had a lot to do with it. The midfield is full of stat padders who will score incredibly well while up forward there’s plenty of guns ready to score highly. In the ruck, he has 2 great options with Cameron always a high scorer. Barass is more speculative in his new role but should be good and May can partner him if Dawson wants a run through the middle. There are not really any holes in this line up and Steele will take some beating in his first attempt at a DuFFLe premiership. So much so, I’m placing him ahead of his old man.
IV) Cookie - Ingredients
B: Vlaustin, Caldwell
M: Whitfield, Davies-Uniake, Wanganeen-Milera
F: B King, Greene
R: Xerri
I: Sweet, Tilthorpe, Dale, Worpel
Em: Neale, Fisher, Amon, Duursma
Expected STC:
Analysis
In Xerri and Sweet, Cookie will have some tough decisions on match day but they’re decisions you enjoy as coach. The forward depth could be shaky but with 3 stars and 2 of them on the rise still, they’ll do well. In defence, there will be some tough calls but it will be down to match ups between a raft of players as to whether they’re likely to perform better in the midfield or racking up marks and tackles. This side could be incredible but it will take some fantastic coaching. I can see Cookie struggling to reach his ‘if only’ score most weeks but that doesn’t matter when it’s in excess of 200, he’ll still pump out mammoth scores regularly and maintain his spot at the pointy end.
V) Blockerhall – Willsie Aeroplane
B: Weitering, J Steele
M: Z Merrett, Parish, McLuggage
F: Curnow, J Cameron
R: Darcy
I: R Marshall, J Kelly, Fogarty, Simpkin
Em: Bryan, Callaghan, Lohmann, D Moore
Expected STC: M Cox, McLean, Z Guthrie
Analysis
Blocker was in a good spot on draft night to pick up a quality ruck as well as some great midfielders and duly did so. However, he’s punting on the fitness of a few players who are beginning the season on the sidelines. That leaves him vulnerable early but there is good depth to the side across each line. He might have the strongest forwardline in the comp and that ruck pairing will be near impossible to beat when fit. He’s again put his trust in Weitering to carry his defence who should also put up good numbers and keep the side in top 4 contention.
VI) CaptDazza – Jolly Jokers
B: L Ryan, Duggan
M: Serong, P Cripps, T Kelly
F: M King, Amartey
R: Nankervis
I: McInerney, Holmes, Hipwood, Finlayson
Em: Lobb, Dangerfield, Sanders, W Ashcroft
Expected STC: Mills, Gulden, Aliir, J Henry
Analysis
Dazza took over the Slammo strategy of drafting OOFTIT’s who score well late in the draft as others refused to grab them. It’s helped round out the side nicely as the depth in his side is incredibly strong and probably the best in the DuFFLe. That midfield group is very intimidating and it doesn’t stop there. 2 A grade rucks and a plethora of defensive options means he will be right up there this season. The only area for opposition to exploit might be his forwardline depending on the health of his players.
VII) MattyT – El Primero
B: Bergman, Haynes
M: Neale, Crouch, Sinclair
F: Stringer, Allen
R: Gawn
I: Moyle, Newcombe, Riccardi, McKercher
Em: Rivers, C Cameron, Idun, M Reid
Expected STC: Florent, Ross, Keays, H Reid
Analysis
Matty was the beneficiary of my passing on Gawn for Naicos and with it, he’s picked a very intimidating side. With some old heads in the midfield who find possessions at will, they should feast on points. The forward line will have some injuries to overcome and will be the weak point but on their day, are quite solid. Defence will be carried by the hope that Haynes and Bergman take over the half back role at each of their clubs. There are also some youngsters sitting on the pine who could explode and post some big numbers this season, there’s a lot to like in Matty’s team.
VIII) Boss Hog – Luke’s Dukes
B: Battle, J Clark
M: Brayshaw, Zorko, Liberatore
F: Fritsch, Waterman
R: T de Koning
I: Reidy, Hopper, Higgins, Humphries
Em: Viney, Rachele, Perryman, Brown
Expected STC: Lester
Analysis
The Boss Hog has a season under his belt and armed with this knowledge, put together a very strong side. TDK has already proven a man on the rise and if Pittonet stays out of the Blues side, the Duke’s are going to set some high scores. Up forward he has some strong options although injuries are looking to hurt him early in the season and he may need to rely on others. His midfield is very strong and full of big time ball winners along with some handy depth on the bench. The same goes for defence with a bounty of high marking defenders who love to get the ball. The Boss is looking to ensure his place at the top of the ladder this season.
IX) FD1016 – Bay Bros
B: Ridley, S Taylor
M: Laird, Wines, Young
F: Hogan, Georgiades
R: English
I: Day, Petracca, Rayner, J Berry
Em: Morrison, Blakey, Chapman, Keays
Expected STC: Pendlebury
Analysis
FD will be hoping for some injury effected players to recover quickly as a few of her likely starters have had an interrupted start to the season. She will be hoping English returns to his prime but he could be a shrewd early selection. There isn’t much depth if he doesn’t but I don’t think he’ll need too much help. Hogan and Goergiades are an incredibly strong starting pairing up forward with some more good ball winners in the middle and on the bench. Down back she’ll be hoping some of her injury plagued players like Ridley and Chapman can get themselves on the park to post the scores needed to win the DuFFLe.
X) Moptop – White Rabbits
B: Andrews, Kemp
M: Anderson, Rozee, Rowell
F: Treacy, Amiss
R: Witts
I: Reeves, Lukosius, W Day, Roberts
Em: Ash, Powell, Setterfield, Stengle
Expected STC: Langdon, Bowes, T McCartin, J Sharp
Analysis
Moppy has picked a side of young bolters this season and that could see him do the same up the ladder. Witts is the old head keeping everyone on track but I expect him to spend some time on the sidelines resting his old bones and those days will see the Rabbits struggle. However, that centre line could be incredible and there’s plenty of young talent waiting on the pine for their turn. He’s got the star young Freo forwards kicking goals for him and that will hopefully go incredibly well. The defence is also young and improving and I think Moppy will have his work cut out trying to play everyone in their best positions each weekend.
XI) BomberTroy – El Bombres
B: T Stewart, Dunkley
M: T Miller, Horne-Francis, Soligo
F: Ugle-Hagan, Caddy
R: Draper
I: Flynn, McGrath, Kako, Howe
Em: B Williams, Durham, Coniglio, Impey
Expected STC: H Reid, Tsatas
Analysis
BT has his usual assortment of Bombers in his side but there’s also plenty of talent around them. His defence stands out with 2 of the long time best down back. Between Draper and the OOFTIT rucks, he does have depth there if not the high scoring potential. The forwardline is full of youngsters who are looking to establish themselves as goal kickers but they may struggle early with JUH’s absence. The midfield has a lot of potential too with a host of youngsters on the field with large scoring potential. They will be fighting it out for finals this year.
XII) The Colonel – Justin’s Jokers
B: B Scott, Crisp
M: Flanders, Bontempelli, Shiel
F: Bolton, O Henry
R: Meek
I: Pittonet, Ch Warner, Rankine, O'Meara
Em: Pearce, Miers, Lipinski, Bo Hill
Expected STC: Zurhaar
Analysis
The Colonel might have missed draft night but there were some shrewd picks made for him and somehow, he’s avoided any of the cursed OOFTIT’s. In Meek he has a great starting ruck while he will enjoy watching the mercurial forwards at his disposal. It will be a matter of getting his midfield fit as several of them have faced injury plagued starts to the year. There is some depth there and he should be able to cover while they make their returns. In defence, it’s less clear cut and he will have to use some shrewd coaching to select the right players there in the right weeks.
