TOPIC: 2025: Round 24 Options After Reschedule

As you probably know, the Gold Coast and Essendon game has been rescheduled for the AFL's R24. No doubt this will be the opening game of the round, but both teams will play again that round, probably on the Sunday, against Port Adelaide and Carlton, respectively.

This is our DuFFLe Grand Final. Two DuFFLe players will be affected. If I let the results be processed as normal, which match scores do I use? GC v Ess, GC v PA, or Ess v Car?

My first thought was to ignore the GC v Ess game, but the practicalities of this will be hard for the DuFFLers selecting their teams as there will be a good chance of players getting injured etc and not playing in the subsequent R24 game. So I don't think that is fair.

  • I could find the best scores from the players playing twice and use that.
  • I could allow the DuFFLers to pick their teams after the GC v Ess game, but that only works if, say, the GC v Ess is played on a Wednesday and the other matches commence from Thursday. That might not be the case.
  • We could cut the DuFFLe competition short by one round. R19 could be the last HomeNaway and R23 the Grand Final.

Any thoughts, ladies and gentlemen?

Option 3 sounds like the cleanest of them all.
Rnd 19 - Rnd 23.

The GC vs Essendon game is near certain to be the first game of that round and early in the week. I would probably just ignore the game like your 2nd option suggests.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I'm in option 2 camp, and I reckon we could probably manage around compromise anyway. PITA though

I'm probably in the camp of ending it one week short, as the last round is often compromised anyway with players going for early surgery etc.
But not bothered either way you go, though it would make sense to not include the Ess v GC match.

I would like some more feedback on this please.

As I see it, there are two good options.

i) End the HomeNaway at the end of Round19. Rounds 20-23 become our finals. The benefit of this is that we have a "clean" ending to the year. No repercussions to the Grand Final / Pollyanna Cup teams due to GoldCoast and Essendon having to play twice in Round 24.

ii) We ignore the GC/Ess game that, I'm sure, will be the very first game of R24 and treat the remaining matches as part of our usual R24 Finals Week. The benefit here is that we get to play the DuFFLe for another week.

I want to know everyone's opinion. Choose either i) or ii). By all means, if you have a better solution, I am keen to entertain that.

Option 2. It’s one game and will affect less Dufflers…

I'm rolling a couple of Bombers, including Zac Merret, an obvious key premium; Bomber Troy is obviously worse situated. Steele has Martin and Langford, two obvious starters, plus Dan Rioli. I feel that missing those scorers in a final is sub-optimal, or do I have the planned outcome wrong? Are they actually playing two games that round? Haven't paid enough attention sorry.

They're playing 2 games that round. Essendon and GC will have played 1 less game than everyone else after this week and they'll make it up in the final round by playing twice (most likely the first and last game of Rd 23).

Option 2 is the only real option, remove that make up game from the round and we are good to go.

Essendon play Carlton at MCG and Port play Gold Coast at Adelaide Oval in normal Rd 24 matches.
In addition, Gold Coast host Essendon at Gold Coast in the rescheduled game.
So far I'm not aware of the AFL giving any indication how they propose to schedule these 3 games. I imagine they are going to wait to see if there's any finals implications.

There seems to be some thoughts that the rescheduled match will be the 1st game of the round, but that doesn't make sense to me, as Carlton and Port would get the benefit of playing a potentially tired team.

If the Ess v GC is played last, sometime after the weekend around Monday to Wednesday, then its just 2 potentially tired teams playing each other.
Of course being fair isn't always the highest priority for the AFL

I'm still ok with whatever you decide Merc, no real preference, so long as GC v Ess is ignored.

Cheers. It has knobs on it for sure. Stupid round 0. In that context all for ignoring the makeup game.
