Long-time readers (re: sufferers) of my posts will know how much I loved watching Cam play, and how disappointed I was with the way it all ended for him at Freo. When it came to modern, professional footy he felt like square peg. He didn’t look or play like a modern footy player, but he had such wonderful attributes and crucially for Freo he could kick the ball through the big sticks and set up others to do the same. I’ve always felt that if teams figure out a way to harness the weird and the wayward it really helps the club, and if a wayward player could stick around the club long enough they might have a better chance of figuring out how to succeed outside of it. Maybe that’s fanciful. It’s probably more transactional than that. I don’t know.

But watching him play was fun, seeing how much he loved the Dockers was fun, his big dumb grin was fun; and following Freo isn’t always (or often?) fun.

A few years back the club created a one-off, signed retro trading card featuring Cam as part of a charity auction. After a bidding war with (I think) Blockerhall, I handed over a fair chunk of change to buy it for my mate’s 40th. He loved it. It was frivolous, and funny, and having it sitting on his work desk brought a smile to his face. It won’t anymore. Being a Freo fan is less fun for Cam’s passing.

Heartfelt condolences to his family, and those who knew him.

Thanks for everything Dardy.

It’s not just the AFL. That doesn’t cope with the wonderful and weird players most professional sports don’t as teams are too obsessed with risk management instead of having a player who thinks and plays differently.

Same in the corporate world. Companies talk about embracing neurodiversity. I’ve been in the corp world for 42 years and I saw more real positive embracing of difference 40 years ago than I do now. It’s all lip service.

Quasi, you only need to look north of the river to realise not all teams are obsessed with player risk management.

Just love your post Morgan. Thank you. It encapsulates everything I too felt and liked about him. He was a character, a one off, an individual and unfortunately there aren't many of them seen very much in football these days. Plus on his day he was bloody good. He could play!

I remember well when covid was rife and the club and AFL were trying to keep the fans updated with what players were doing. Most were about training, keeping fit, etc and then there was Dardy! All the tributes seem to say what a lovely, kind, caring and fun person he was and this seems to sum it up. I just so wish he could have overcome his inner demons.

I loved that too CA - He had some natural talent.
It brought a smile to our household watching that at the time - we even tried it but nowhere as good as Cam and his sisters..

Cheers Morgs, it was me, but I didn't want that card as much as you. If he ever wants to sell though, LMK.

I've been really flattened by the loss of CamMac, to get to the AFL is pretty enormous, to impact it even harder, and to have it all over while your talent withers on the vine just wrong. But we all bear witness to what might have been.

Twenty nine, just not right by any measure. I wanted to write more here, but it's too hard to articulate against the pure loss for family, friends, and us, the wider Fremantle Football Club familiy.

Here's hoping he can make you smile or even laugh one more time. Vale Dardy McCrafty.

(edit. Apologies CA, didn't realise you had already linked it)

It's taken me some days to post this, too close to home.
Here goes
Vale Cam Mac , my deaf son is your age. 6 years ago this was nearly him after a failed relationship.
What a mess we make of the world, that genial young men descend into this nightmare.
You are well remembered here, Cam, my friend. Our friend. The players' friend. A friend to all. Vale.
