the rules are convoluted and highly subjective

being out on Optus, the MCG or Adelaide oval with 36 of Australia's finest athletes tearing it up while 80,000 rabid fans are hanging on your every move and ready to hurl abuse at you at every opportunity, is an insane pressure cooker cauldron of emotions

umpires are not only just human, but some are very flawed or unusual individuals to want to be putting themselves in the middle of an AFL ground

I can't even imagine being in their shoes for a day. the lack of consistency is not surprising and the whole thing is a hot mess of the AFL's making, among many other hot messes on their plate

Iv. 4 concussions in 12 months. Spent considerable time out - came back 2018 with helmet and no concussions for 6 yrs til the Maynard incident.

I think it is the tribunal and MRP Hamish is gunning for, not the umpires.

I started losing my passion for the game when the Steves took over and rudely ripped away the veil of illusion we like to call values or principles or whatever suits...

and now as a distant observer I have no skin in the game. I think Morgan's cut through to the guts of it pretty well as you'd expect. The letter is an emotional rant, perhaps understandably considering the circumstances leading to him writing it but emotion has no place in any effort to gain clarity around how the tribunal operates or the AwFL itself. The letter appeals to the emotions but not pragmatism and you have to be pragmatic.

One thing the tribunal could do and should have years ago in my 'umble is do away with the whole 'intent' thing and judge on outcomes. Take away the room to worm out of consequence... if there's high contact, it's high contact. End of. Starting with the low end penalty... say two weeks minimum and going up from there with all the jiggery pokery around severity and impact etc.

Just hang the bastards and sort out fairness later.

Not gunna happen, GS, the afl needs wriggle room to implement it's business model.

The thing about business models is that they are dependent on a market to thrive. What we are seeing in overseas markets (and I am most definitely overseas myself right now) is a threat to the contact sporting market in the form of of litigation from head injured ex players, many of whom have what looks like a legitimate gripe with their sporting admins over allowing them to play / play on despite suffering apparent concussion symptoms. The impact on those sporting codes involved is considerable and could threaten their continued viability.

I like my sport to be relatively unmitigated, myself. I like the idea of uninhibited bloodshed (within the rules of course and completely within the spirit of the game m'lord) but I also harbour misgivings about the effects of that and the memory of Cassius Clay trying to coordinate the drawing of a bow to fire an arrow into an Olympic cauldron is one I still find chilling and disturbing. I love sport but I don't want to see sporting heroes reduced to shambling wrecks begging in the streets like so many discarded war veterans... know what I mean? We (sports fans) need to accept a need to protect players.

anyway...

Where is the media outrage about the much more dangerous and intentional knee to the head of Amiss in an off the ball incident. I think Brayshaw is completely correct in his article.

Sorry... explain this to me,

Brayshaw writes an emotional letter to and about the AFL and its penalty system and you're upset about media coverage because they're the same thing?

It seems to me, GS, that the media is selective about their outrage and coverage of these incidents, why are they not going all in on Miller getting away with what he did, in the same way as they are on Schultz?

And how did the Miller incident not get a higher classification from the MRP? Did the MRP feel that a knee on a Freo player would not attract attention and scrutiny from the media?

I'm in the same rabbit hole as RM, but like to think I'm not quite as far down it...

Dunno about rabbit holes... it reads like Persecution Gatorade.

Brayshaw's letter is an emotional mash. So is imagining the MRP decides not to rule on a Freo related incident because... I dunno, purple popsicle flavours.

There are probably dozens, if not hundreds of calls that don't get made during a season for one reason or another. They're not all related to a secret conspiracy to do Freo in. The victimhood gets pretty tiresome.

But it is a fact that our guys are viewed differently when it comes to these issues. Robbo on 360 was scathing on Switta when he was rubbed out for a chicken wing tackle and Andy Brayshaw was condemned as having deliberately eye gouged an opponent and then Eastern states players were let off charges and viewed in a sympathetic light by Eastern States footy media. JLo is being dismissed as being a whinger for sticking up for Jye to the AFL. It's about time someone from the club did speak up in defence of our players and not just bend over and take it up the a--e like your suggesting we do. It's been going on for too long now Guy and if you can't see it then maybe you've got your head stuck down one of those rabbit holes.

There’s not an open conspiracy active within the AFL specifically targeting Freo. That would be a ridiculous suggestion, wouldn’t it?

The sad, unfortunate reality is that Freo sit among among a group of footy clubs who don’t get regular attention - think how Foxtel’s AFL 360 “agenda” every week seems to be filled with stories about the $$$$ clubs like Carlton, Collingwood, Melbourne, Essendon, sometimes WCE or Sydney … did I miss any?

Generally, the only time Freo get a mention is after a dramatic loss, or a player has committed a MRO worthy transgression or similar.

This informal rule is also true for North Melbourne, St Kilda etc etc.

The AFL Money Rule is a situation that’s never likely to change.

A lot of sympathy being poured out for Brisbane after they copped a few injuries in last weeks game. Short memories and no recollection of our game against them earlier in season when we lost McDonald, Cox and Worner in 3rd and 4th quarters. Only reason why they got so close. Crocodile tears Fagan
