Do you want a 3 strikes policy, or don't you want a 3 strikes policy? That seems to be the question?

Some see it as too harsh, ...and want 'flexibility' to suit modern times..

Others see it as as 'apropriate'.

I' see it as appropriate. Say no to drugs!

Simple has that, and the AFL should fly that flag. Set standards, and test standards.

Be "in it", or choose to be "out"...no inbetweens.

No excuses, ....have personal responsibility.. Be elite. To blame the AFL for the 'gravy train' & money that is thrown at youngsters is ludicrous. ..

Could you really imagine it any other way? None of us like what these youngster are exposed to ...but what are you proposing?, ...to not notice, propogate draft, or pay talented individuals...?

Really?

Correct Cletus. You can put in all the safeguards you can you can have governance on governance but in the end the one person who can change things is the individual.

You make a choice, but some are more susceptible more at risk due to either personality or circumstance, we need to provide support but in the end it is up to that individual.

Watch the Jim Carroll bio “basketball diaries” one of the best books and movies on addiction ever made.

This is a tragic story. However; it does not indicate that club or sport culture is the problem. Society has a drug problem. If Harley had never taken the football opportunity and had become a tradie instead, would he be happy and sober now? Very few institutions would be as positive for a young male as an AFL club. They are not perfect though.

Without knowing anything about Harley's background, I am willing to bet that whatever school he went to has more of a drug culture that a present day AFL club. Would the police force, military, medical, religious or education institutions have a better record on drug education and support than the AFL?

'The way I left football, unfinished, left me lost in the world,' he told Leader newspapers.

'That brought on depressing episodes and things like that. Getting to the highest level, which you'd dedicated your whole life to, and then all of a sudden being a nobody, I found that pretty challenging.'

My understanding is that next year player salary caps hit 318 million. Perhaps clubs should be required to put 1-2% of that into third party (outside of the AFL system) support services for players and ex players transitioning into life after football. I don't know much, but it seems to be Universally accepted that outcomes for people who have access to either well developed support networks or professional support services have better outcomes than those who don't.

The "3 strikes" policy is designed to avoid the WADA code where one strike sees you out for a year or more (per Willie Rioli).

This keeps our best players on the park, maximising prospects of winning and selling tickets & merch.

It is positioned as being in the interests of player welfare but that would appear to be BS. This is where I think the problem is - genuinely having an interest to support "fringe" players who have a problem.

Ultimately, the players are adults who need to see the problem and want to help themselves, but support from friends, families, mentors, colleagues and employers can make a difference. Sometimes between life and death, tragically.

If players are guilty under the WADA code then aren’t they excluded from club assistance? That’s a huge point of the ‘medical model’ that club Doctors and the support of the club can help players with drug issues, as opposed to locking the door on them and the isolation that Harley discussed being thrust on them overnight.

The AFL thinks it has a responsibility to players to help them. You might disagree with how they do it but I think they’re trying to do the right thing. I don’t have a problem with what they’re doing.

Straddo - the NHL puts all fines levied against players into a fund dedicated to "player assistance" with medical/health issues. The AFL tribunal could do the same

A lot of player's early development depends on who they are placed with on arrival. Most of our recent new draftees have spent significant time with senior players like Nat Fyfe who can show them how to behave on and off the field or with players families. This is unlike when Gold Coast had Harley Bennell shacked up with resident druggie Karmichael Hunt which was always a recipe for disaster. That pic in today's Worst gave me shivers.

Is that why most of our players struggle to hit a target inside 50?

Maybe but at least they learn how to live a healthy lifestyle and not develop poor habits. Could also help their surfing as well.

When he played he definitely looked like a talented footballer and a great shame what happened to him. A bit unfair to say he struggled before football since it appears that his problems started after he was drafted.
