Bit of an Ouch moment (in that Jlo in his presser had pointed the finger at the Adelaide factor) on the car radio on the way home, when the big man Sean Darcy said the two weeks in Adelaide had nothing to do with the loss, saying that they were well looked after and had plenty of fun and time to bond together. Implicit in what he said was the fact that they hadn't come back mentally prepared for the game, or hadn't been prepared by those that are supposed to make sure their heads are right for the contest. Sounded contrite and I appreciate his honesty.

I don't think it's an ouch moment as much as him not being good at comprehension.

He's agreeing that Adelaide was a factor. He just thinks the trip home from Adelaide is separate from the nice time he had in Adelaide.

Either way, I hope he's having another barbeque before the next game.

Maybe our coach could mention the damn South Australian beer and we could nod knowingly and titter some. Per chance we could look at the Adelaide dew and sticky soil and agree with our coach that they were a factor and we could stick out one’s bottom lip and quiver it. I’m sure that’s what the Swans supporters would do if a performance like this happened to them.

Adelaide was a great time for everyone.
Except for those that actually played footy instead of goofing off in Rundle Mall, Sean!
Ya bloody handbrake.

I do expect us to bounce back from this, so I'm still hopeful that Saturday night's bad day at the office won't derail our season. We're used to wild ups and downs by now, I expect us to be back on the Flagmantle wagon in a few weeks and then off it again a few after that. It's just how we roll.
But of all the losses I've witnessed over the years I think this was the most demoralising for me, because it hurt to watch that mob playing football like it was fun. Playing with dare, energy & belief. Urged on by a wild crowd driven to frenzy by the sheer giddiness of it.
In contrast, we make football look hard. We grind away at wins and narrow losses, trying to limit the opposition to a score that our forwards have a chance of beating. We're not an exciting team to watch and our players don't look like they're enjoying themselves much. And we've been a boring team to watch for what seems like a very long time.
If we're to win a flag this way, I'll take it. But gee, I'd love to see our boys take on games the way Wet Toast did on Saturday night. I'd love to see us up by 60-odd points at three quarter time.
Is it just me?

What frustrates me is how fixturing gets glossed over and the usual talking points take over.

And what frustrates me also is how week to week you all are. It seems every loss is validation of how you feel about the team you support.

The team that lost on Saturday night is the same team that looked like a top four team in Adelaide.

The problem Hypen, is that we lost two games in Adelaide, and didn't look anything like a top 4 team, and then we got pumped by one of the poorest performing clubs over the last few years.

So as fans, what can we expect going forward, that we go back to producing "good" performances where we toil all day and only lose by a goal? This isn't just a "once off", it's the repetition of a pattern that we've all seen the team produce for a lot of years, and as a fan I find it pretty frustrating, I suppose that's the nature of being a fan and your team isn't performing to the level you want them too.

I realise footy is a fickle sport and teams can turn it around and for all I know, in 5 months everyone will look back and laugh at how wrong some supporters were for questioning whether this club could win a premiership the way we're playing.

And for the sake of clarity, I'm not blaming the playing group, I don't think they could have thrown any more at the Blues and Port than what they had, it's bigger than that, it starts at the very top and permeates the culture of our club. Someone needs to stand up and make a statement, and change the way that the club thinks about football.

Earlier in the thread was a list of our worst losses, they all hurt, but many of those were galvanising, who could forget facing off the with the feral Essendon supporters in 2003, walked away thinking oh yeh, that was tough, but who knows what next year will bring! 2004 wasn't so good, but we ended up playing finals in 6 of the next 12 seasons. 20 years later, another loss and I'm not seeing some grand future appearing in coming weeks, months, years without some fundamental switch in thinking.

Anyway, what would I know, I hope I'm wrong and the winds of fortune blow a flag Freos way sooner rather than later. Whenever it happens, games like this will be nothing more than a footnote for all the long suffering fans who'll breathe a sigh of relief that they were still around to see it.

I can think of a few things I’d rather do than wallow in worst Freo defeats of all time.

Like, for example, shut my thumb in a car door.

Or open a long neck with a screwdriver and stab myself in the chin just below my teeth, creating a Kirk Douglas dimple.

I could go on. Talk about defeatism!

I like Sean Darcy’s approach, no excuses. It’s a good starting point when you’re playing professional sport. Let’s have a bit more of that.

Didnt we ask for back to back games in Adelaide to ease our travel burden?
No point whinging about it now...

If you get a chance listen to the Nat Fyfe interview on the club website about the derby. An outstanding player and representative of the club.
