I can't stand the way everything that happens in a close game is amplified. Particularly towards umpires.

But the Draper non call last night.

In essence it's not the quality of the decision, it's the underlying reason for the decision.

The kick wasn't paid because of field position, time, and score. And that's really bad. Laying on the ball is flat out rubbish.

It’s the obvious poor decisions that are overlooked which reflect badly on the umpires as a group and AFL as an organisation.

If it wasn’t a professional sport with millions spent running and betting on the the show you could possibly overlook the rubbish quality of the overall administration of umpiring, and the review/tribunal system. But it’s not, and week after week poor umpiring in particular is a blight on the game. Pay the obvious frees and let the minor infringements go, and the game would be much better for it. It’s seems acceptable in a grand final to umpire that way.

Sure we’ve got to encourage and protect the umpires but isn’t quality important?

What don’t the AFL get about that?

If it were an occasional blemish I could live with it but this is happening most weeks now where a game result is directly influenced by an umpiring howler. It can't just be ignored as it is directly affecting team's fortunes and as a result bringing the game into disrepute.

They say umpires have a tough job, and agree there’s no tougher game to adjudicate in the universe. But there was nothing tough to weigh up in that non-decision.
